Question Wheel Stud Replacement

I need to replace a few studs on my rear hubs and I have the tool to swedge them and have access to a 40 ton press. My question is getting the old studs out. Will they drive out with a big hammer if I heat them with a torch? How do you all get them out?
Thanks!

If you take them out with a big hammer you can count on cracking something. That swage has to be cut.You need a cutter with the teeth ground at an angle so they don't cut the drum too. Most just cut the swage with a hole saw,but that is when the drums are being replaced without worrying about saving the drum.

You can cut the swage, but make sure you don't cut the drum. You can also just press them out, but make sure you use a good support around where it will press out, so you don't warp the hub or drum.

I have used the 5/8 hole saw to cut the swedge without damaging the drum.
I wouldn't try to remove them without cutting off the swedge.

As said before I used a 5/8 hole saw in my drill press and went in about 1/16 gradually then banged them out easily with a 2# hammer. I left a couple in and will press in 3 then push the last 2 out then repeat pressing.

The swedge,or swage as some shops call it,is the part of the stud that is squashed down, clamping the drum to the hub.

The Vince Falter page is excellent. great photos and very detailed explanation. Don't forget that repro drums take a 1/16" longer stud than old stock drums. See Brattons website catalog under wheels / page 2
