There should be a regular wire from the small terminal on the starter solenoid that does not trigger the starter to the coil.

There should be a wire from the ignition switch to the coil with a resistor in it.

There should be a wire from the other coil terminal to the distributor.

There should be a model T engine in your car.

Make sure your distributor body is grounded to the battery well and the moveable plate that the points mount to has a good ground to the body of the distributor also.

Good one Jack. Hooveric: Jacks #2 suggestion is probably your best bet. There should be a resistor in the pos. wire feeding the coil. Or you can also use a coil with a built in resistor. When cold it allows full voltage to pass through for starting. As it warms up the voltage drops as resistance goes up increasing point life. Some thing like the wires in a toaster but not as hot. Ask for a 1960's Chrysler resistor at the parts store. Small white porcelan rectangle. 2 terminals with a built on mounting bracket. A couple of bucks.

Totally wrong forum for this , but i guess you being a new guy makes it ok for once !!!
This question belongs on the hamb board....

Premature contact point burn up is always the same problem no matter what vehicle. Contacts have too much current going thru them !!!
A proper system will use a 1.5 ohm ballast ressitor and a 1.5 ohm ignition coil. The combined 3 ohms of ressitance will give you some point life. Also us a echlin ( napa) CS786 contact set with a RR175 condensor. These are the best available.............
