I had the pleasure of meeting George Barris around 30 years ago, in his shop in the Los Angeles area. I just walked in, went to his opened office door and saw him sitting at his desk. I said hello and asked him where all the Merc's were... He laughed and said, "I wish I had a Merc". The walls in the showroom were covered with photos of all the cars, etc. that he and his brother had built. Outside in the lot there were several movie vehicles that they did. I'm glad I got to meet and talk with one of my childhood hero's.

Yesterday I removed the fan assembly from the ’39 Lincoln Zephyr to assess the damage. The vulcanized rubber cushion between the fan and the hub assemblies had dried out and started to crumble. As a result, the two sections of the fan assembly separated… I guess I can’t complain too much after all, the car is 76 years old… The problem is; no one re-pops the rubber part so, another ‘fix’ has to be found. A friend of mine, Bruce in Ohio (who also has a ’39 Zephyr) had the same problem and came up with a good way to correct it.. He drilled and tapped three holes in the assembly and secured the two parts with screws while leaving the remaining original rubber in place. I’m planning on doing the same repair. Here are a few photos of the fan assembly that I removed.

I got some very sad news just now. My good friend and fellow Hot Rodder Don R. passed away from complications resulting from multiple operations at 3:30 am. Don was the first friend I made when I moved to Florida 22 years ago. He loved Flatheads, hot rods, rat rods, etc. He will be missed by all the Cigar City Flatheads (that's Don's car on our logo) and by me especially. I know he's gone to a better place but that still doesn't make it any easier to grasp the reality. It’s tough to say goodbye, Godspeed Don.

Don's passing is sad indeed.
I got to know Don while playing with flatheads at Vic's. A fun guy with a great sense of humor and not afraid to kid Vic if Vic made a blunder. I had some memorable rides in his hot rod. One long ride to Garlit's museum up the road about 90 miles. All that shaking gets your bladder working overtime!
He will be sorely missed by the boys at Saturday playtimes in Vic's shop.
My condolences to his family
John

I am deeply saddened on the loss of our dear friend Don. He was a sweetheart of a fellow and I will always have fond memories accompanied with smiles as I reflect on the many fun times we had working on cars in Vic's garage. My thoughts and prayers go out to his lovely wife Karen and other family members and friends. Steve

My condolences to Don's family and the CCF crew. I had the privilege of first meeting Don at the Barners Bash in '09. An all around good guy to hang with. He will be missed.
Rest in peace Don.

I am contemplating getting involved in a new business venture, it is a departure from my broadcasting, advertising and marketing background and it requires a significant amount of start up capital so, I'm thinking about thinning out the collection. Most of you, (if you read my postings), should have an idea of the cars and trucks (Flatheads, etc.) that I've got so, if anyone is interested in one or more of the toys, I'd love to hear from you.

I got a phone call last night from my friend Don's cousin, Bob in NJ. We had a nice time talking about Don, Hot Rods, and how much we already miss Don. Bob texted me a few photos of Don and him from 'back in the day' in Jersey. I'm posting them here for all Don's friends. Don is the one on the far left in this group photo of a Car Club. In the second photo that's Don on the left again. The third photo is, you guessed it, Don on the left with Ed 'Big daddy' Roth center and Bob on the right.

Steve,

There will be a service for Don on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. As soon as I get more information I'll post it here.
