Default Only problem I have with this type of site...

many times the things I find of interest and comment on are not part of the thred title. e.g. thread title: 'what radiator paint should i use?' has a comment of 'this company does a quality radiator rebuild and this is what they use'. I wouldn't normally read the thread based on the question and i would therefore miss the company recommendation...fwiw,jm

I agree, It will be more time consuming, but I guesse the unwanted Spam and easier pic's will make it worth the effort. Rod

On the upper "tool bar" is a search tool where you can search threads or posts. It might help zero in on what you're looking for.

I agree Jim. Many times the thread drifts a little from the subject and the additional subject matter enhances the original post.

Maybe but the same can be said about the old format unless the person put their reply in the subject line.
Here I like that I can quickly scan through the content of the replies without clicking every reply link. I read every reply to every post today on my lunch break and that's something i could never do in the old format. I'm a slow clicker I guess. Just a thought.

Keep in mind you can also "mouseover", move your cursor over the title of the thread, and be able to read the first three lines or so without having to open up the whole thread. Sometimes thread titles don't exactly match the meat inside and this is a good way to determine if you want to open the whole thread.

it's just an observation. I've used many different types of forums and they all have their pros and cons. I understand search functions and have used them so that isn't what I was speaking to. fwiw,jm

just took a look at the search here. I have a tendency to read certain authors comments no matter the topic. I just tried a search on 'mason' and didn't turn my own thread. I'll have to take a look and see if a search by author is available. (now this topic has changed from 'the only problem i have with this type of forum to search functions. I wouldn't read a topic of 'problem with this type of forum' but i would be intrested in learning more on the search functions. ) <p>(trying html) The first forum i used was using the dial outs at michigan tech to access a bbs system in ann arbor. it was a stream of comments. you could only see the last 20 or so posts and they would scroll away. You would have to search the archive for any posts since the last time you were on. it was great fun, especially at 300 baud. It was all upper case, so i got out of the habit of capitals. also it didn't handle punctuation so good so most used spaces for line breaks. when i migrated to other boards the habit was hard to break...fwiw,jm

Jim,

I think the problem you describe is more a function of the poster, not the software.

Misleading titles, the inability of posters to stay on topic and the unwillingness to start new threads all contribute to the problem you describe.

Like Ryan said, give it time. Hopefully people will adjust their posting habits and make life easier on everyone.

Hit Advanced Search, type in your name in either the first box (keyword) or the second (user name) and this thread comes up.

Jim, if you hit "Advanced Search" there is a field for ya... Be sure you enter the exact username...

Alternatively, click on my username over there on the left... From there, you can see all of my posts.

One thing I hated about the old Barn was that the replies to posts did not appear in chronological order. This is MUCH better.

The format may be less time consuming, but it's certainly more time consuming, when you get completely hooked on all your sites!

Amen to that! It's too bad that all the "old hands" are now "junior members" -- level playing field, I guess. We know who you are!
