Default Another 40 Deluxe Grille Question

My '40 was missing the 01a-8434 lower grille plate (or Ford calls it a spacer) that attaches the grille louver panels & chin pan together @ the bottom. It then bolts to the radiator lower shield.
Does the 8434 plate mount to the very bottom of the grille side panels & chin or above the lower flange on these parts? Fits both ways. Also do the recesses with the captive nuts face up or down? Lastly , does this lower plate go above or below the lower radiator pan where they bolt together? My picture shows it bolted above the lower grille flange, but I saw another 40 this weekend & it was on the very bottom. Thanks.

Default Re: Another 40 Deluxe Grille Question

On my 40 01A-8434 bolts directly to the bottom of the grille pieces and chin piece with the recesses facing down toward the ground. The radiator splash pan then bolts on. Here's my 40. Click on photos to enlarge. Notice the difference between the early (black grille) and late production (your grille) louvered grille panels RE: number of louvers and width of the sheet metal where trim fastens. Also, early production ashtrays "push in" and then slide up. Later production swing out. Hopefully, "Kube" will correct me if I am incorrect. He really knows his 40 Fords inside and out. Hopefully, his book will soon be ready for publication.

19Fordy- Thanks for your reply. I always enjoy your posts & pictures of your '40. I think you're probably right, looks neater that way.
