Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
I got a set of 15" 65 Ford F100 wheels for my 40 station wagon. They are powder coated and ready to run. I am looking for a set of 15" radial tires at Discount and other outlets that will not look out of place on an otherwise stock 40 Ford wagon. What 15" are you running on your stock car? I want to avoid Diamondback and Coker and get modern black walls.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
The 6.00x16 tire is generally considered to be 28" tall. You can use the following chart to get the size you want that is close to the 28" diameter.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
Philip, I know you said you don't want the size, but I will offer this.
The thing about the original tires is the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio for a bias ply is (I believe) 100%. I'm talking about the height of the sidewall. a 195/70 R 15 has an aspect ratio of 70%. a 195/60 R 15 has a 60% aspect ratio. There are some radial tires available that do not quote an aspect ratio. These have an 82% aspect ratio. This is the tallest you can get in a radial (except for some off road 16 inchers that can be 85%) I'd be looking for one of these where the aspect ratio is not quoted. Try an online search for a tire supplier that can supply a 195 R15. or a 185 R15. If you can see any available, then look to see if there is one that looks ok. My opinion is that some modern tires have awfully cluttered designs on the sidewall. You want to pick one with the least cluttered sidewall design that has a decent looking tread pattern. Now, these tyres in the 195 and 185 sizes are all van tyres. no passenger car has them as standard, but your 40 being a wagon would probably be quite suited. Disclaimer. I found these sizes available here in the UK from a Germany based company. They might not be available in the USA. Here is what would be available to me here in the UK 185 R15: https://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rs...&homologation= 195 R 15: https://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rs...arch+for+tyres The links might not work as they may be location dependent. Bottom line: Pick the size you want (tallest sidewall being most important in my opinion) then look to see what you can get. Mart. |

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
Coker 6.00-16 tire is shown to have a 28.56" diameter. The 205/75R15 shows to be 27.1". The 215/75R15 is listed as 28.3", which is close, but the section width will be wider than a bias ply tire.
https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Coker...16,106456.html I just bought some small, narrow 15" tires for the front of my car. I found only the smaller tires such as 155-15 and 175-15, are not listed with aspect ratios. |

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
75 is likely pretty close to the old 16 for diameter & circumpherence. The 75s were mostly on pickups back in the day but there were some cars that had them after the G78 era. The 15-inchers are getting harder to find for cars these days. There are a lot for pickups & SUVs but they are patterned for more off road use than a car tire. My old family type cars that still have 15s are getting harder to source a decent tire for. A lot of the brand names suggest Asian origins with very few from old brand names. It won't be long before some of the "antique" tire suppliers will be the only place to find them too. My folks went from the "Non-Skid" era to the metric era so I guess I shouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens in my life time.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
After looking at the Discount Tire site, I notice that any radial larger then the 205/75/15 size needs a rim at least 5.5 inches. My pickup rims are 5.0 wide which is ok for the 205s but not the 215s or 225s. They both require 5.5 rim width. Do you think the 1/2" narrower wheel would matter that much?

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
The taller the aspect ratio, the less critical the rim width. So a 1/2" shortfall is not a biggie.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
I found a pretty good candidate:
https://www.discounttire.com/fitment...ice-asc&page=2 It's a Goodyear Wrangler HT LT215/75/R15. What do you think? Not allot of crapola on the sidewalls either. Not cheap though. |

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
I don't know how close to original mine look but I like the P235-70R15 Cooper Discoverers I have on my 52 Merc on stock wheels. I know they are fatter than original but its the look I want for the car. From the side I don't think it is much different from the 7.10x15s bias plies my dad used to run on it in the 1960s.

Thanks everybody for allot of great information. Also the HAMB has a thread on grinding off lettering, etc. to make any tire smooth on the sidewalls.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
Coker and Diamondback are WAY overpriced IMHO. And who knows who made them. Probably Chinese. That's why I went to 15" wheels so I could avoid them.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
Coker has their own manufacturing plant in Chattanooga Tn. I took a tour there and saw it, they aren't Chinese. But...that doesn't mean they aren't expensive.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
Most of the Coker radials have white walls. I don't know about Diamondback. A light truck tire should be fine for an older car. Just use an appropriate tire pressure. The odd sizes for better mileage are more expensive than common sizes. I've found that Discount tire usually has to order them for you since they don't sell a lot of them.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
I also plan to go with the Cooper Trendsetter SE but in the 225/75r/15 size. What I like is the nice clean sidewalls without allot of trash on them. The 225 size is even closer to the 600/16 tire than the 235. It's only 1/4" difference in height from the 600/16 tire. The 600/16 tire is 28.56" in diameter. The P225/75R/15 tire is 28.30" in diameter. I am planning to use these on all 4 wheels on my 40 wagon. And they are only $65 a piece instead of spending over $200 each at Diamondback or Coker and no doubt a better tire. Thanks!

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
I put Cooper Trendsetters on my '41 (205/75/15 and 235/75/15). Terrible. the 235's treads were wavy but they replaced them. the 205'5 in front would never balance correctly.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
with 65 wheels/rims you can run most anything. Really.
Tires can be important to the look or idea you are presenting. I'd ask, what do you want to see or project?? Lots of options. . |

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
But not a good source to buy tires from. They are often over a year old by the time you get them. By the time you pay for mounting, shipping etc. you are way over what it would cost at Discount Tire.

I have always found it best to deal with a local tire store. If you have a problem they will take care of it.

I've had excellent service and prices from "TireRack.com". On the off chance that there is a problem, getting it corrected is a little more complicated, but I've never beed disappointed.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
Not only is it more complicated it is also more expensive. Paying a local shop to mount and balance the tire, you will pay to dismount it if there is a problem and possibly pay shipping back to Tire Rack. You will also pay to mount and balance the new tire if it is replaced. Why not give your local shop the business and they will stand behind the tire if there is a problem.

^^Same here, (to some extent). I don't have much Harbor freight stuff, but do have one of their tire mounting rigs. Can be a real workout, but I treasure the ability to do that kind of thing myself. These days, the wife's car goes to the tire store and not much else.

I've noticed if I crank the steering wheel to the limit there will be bit of tire rub on the frame but not enough to worry me.

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
I've used 215 on 5" wide wheels without crowning, but I would say no wider. I would look for some type of commercial tire as regular 75 series car tires look too balloony to me, the sidewall bulges too much.
I prefer the square look of bias or as close as you can come with radials. Last edited by 1oldtimer; 03-04-2019 at 02:46 AM. |

Re: Looking For A 15" Modern Radial Tire
During the 1980s at a swap meet there was a guy that demolished gas stations that had a trailer with 10 air operated tire machines. I bought a pretty new one for $80 still works today as good as it did back then. Probably the best $80 I ever spent at a swap meet, for a Coats 10-10 machine with air inflate ring. Plus I get to see all my friends at the beginning of winter when they want to mount their snow tires and then spring when it is time to take them off! I gave away my manual tire equipment. In all these years the only thing I have purchased for this are plastic items for working on aluminum wheels. Have since picked up an older Weaver spin balancer so I only use the local tire stores for my 2015 F150. I usually try to keep as much of my $ in the local area.
