Transmission Rebuild
I'm having my engine rebuilt, so I have decided to pull the transmission apart to see what it might need. Being a novice, I can only recognized the big obvious problems like missing/chipped teeth, galled shafts, loose bearing, etc (I did find broken teeth in the differential, but transmission gears look fine to this novice).

I have not driven the car enough to have recognized any unusual noises or jumping out of gear, etc. I plan to replace all the bearings as a minimum, but I'm unsure on the need to replace gears. I would appreciate if anyone could provide me guidance on my gears based on the photos attached (slider gears, main cluster assembly and idler gear). I hope the photos come across as I'm not sure how this site works with attachments.

I did do the "slide down the shaft test" and the sliders did slide pretty fast under their own weight. Based on some comments in the forum, this implies I need new slider gears and main shaft (however there have been some commenters that say this test is hog wash, who to believe?). If the consensus is that I need new sliders, do I also need to replace the cluster and idler so all the gears are new?

Any and all comments are greatly appreciated. If I need a total rebuild, who provides the best kits.?

100_1428.jpg

100_1429.jpg

100_1430.jpg

Re: Transmission Rebuild
If there were bad noises coming from the transmission, I would replace the shafts and bearings only. The gears look pretty good to me.

Re: Transmission Rebuild
As a minimum, replace the two small shafts and the three roller bearings.
Snyder, and others, have the small shafts with "O" rings on the ends of them to prevent oil leakage. Inspect the cluster and the two sliding gears very well. Larry |

Re: Transmission Rebuild
Whatever you do. don't mix new gears with old. They'll be noisy.

Re: Transmission Rebuild
Your gears look OK to me. Look on the inside of the cluster gear where the roller bearings ride, and also check the bearing and surface for the rear of the input shaft, where the front of the output shaft rides. That was the only bad part in my tranny when I bought my car, and just a couple of crunched rollers really made a racket.
