while trying to get the brakes working on my 30 pickup project l noticed the cross over shaft is rubbing on the drive line about where the radius rods are bolted. how much clearance should there be between the cross over shaft and the drive line? I also found that I have a strange front motor mount nothing like the standard 3 spring deal. this has a thick rubber piece with two metal washer like pieces under the yoke and another rubber piece under the frame cross member. i'm wondering if this strange mount is holding the front of the engine higher causing the driveline to be lower and rubbing the cross over. any thoughts on this.

How does the hand crank fit, this will tell you if the engine is too high or low in the front

My friend's 31 frame had the same problem, and it was caused by frame sag at the rear motor mounts.

what kurt and tom said..

check to make sure your brake cross shaft is adjusted properly and positioned at the proper angle. this is imperative to keep it from hitting.
it should only pivot very little to actuate the brakes

About 60 years ago, when I was a teenager, I had a Model A coupe, the brakes were always really hard to push, but they worked. One day when I made a stop I noticed that when I pushed the brake pedal, the transmission would raise up. When I looked under the car I could see the back of the transmission sitting on the brake cross shaft. Don't remember exactly what it was, but there was a problem with both rear motor mounts not holding the back of the engine up. Fixed the motor mounts and cured the hard to push brake pedal.

I may have found my problem today. the rear motor mounts both have a chunk missing where the upper bolts go through. probably happened years ago as the bolts were in tight but approximately a 1" x 1 1/"2 piece of metal gone. this could have let the rear sag. I have an extra mount that needs a bit of welding. should I repair the original mounts or go to the newer rubber mounts in the catalog. I don't even see repops of the originals in mikes catalog, but they are probably out there somewhere. I plan on going with the yoke and spring set up on the front replacing the rubber one that was there.

I've ground a V in the cracks and welded them up with no problem. I'd stick with the original mounts.

I welded up the old mounts and painted them today. they look very useable. i'm getting the spring kit for the front mount. did a little looking in the les pearson restoration book and yeah a droopy frame might be a possibility that is easily cured. after I get the mounts back on i'm going to do a closer inspection on the frame.

Try to find Canadian style rear motor mounts. Much stronger.

As Ian says the Canadian mounts are vastly superior because they are cast steel instead of stamped steel. Not easy to find but well worth it. This 3 part article on motormounts may help also: www.icehouse.net/overland/motormount1.jpg
