1936 three speed transmisson tear down
This transmission has been around for 75 years and seen a number of years out of a car and possibly been thru all sort of exterior environments. So this will need to be totally tore down and inspected and replace all bearings etc that did not hold up over the years.
I have removed the shift tower from the transmission. I have removed the cotter pin and reverse idler shaft pin. I have removed the reverse idler shaft. I have removed the rear main shaft bearing retainer snap ring. I have removed the bolts holding the main drive gear bearing retainer. What do I need to do to remove the main drive gear bearing retainer? I am assuming that once I get main drive bearing retainer off I will be able to remove the front main drive bearing retainer snap ring and the main drive gear assembly will be able to be removed from the front of the transmission. Is that correct? Looking for input on this tear down. I have never done this before. Thank You! |

You need to buy a copy of Mac VanPelts transmission book. His book will answer this question plus many other question you may have during your rebuild.

It looks like the clutch release bearing needs to be removed. Then the hub. Is that the only thing remaining before I can remove the main drive bearing retainer?

I bought Mac's book as well. I had never done a trans before and it took me right through. Not only that, if you have any questions about the info in the book Mac can be reached via telephone.
You might be able to get it apart but the book will show you what to look for.

Remove front bearing retainer (4 bolts0 and then knock the cluster gear shaft right out through the box. The cluster gear will then fall to the bottom of the casing allowing the drive gear to be withdrawn out the front of the box.

Re: 1936 three speed transmisson tear down
Before you remove the cluster gear shaft, cut a piece of 3/4 inch copper pipe the length of the cluster gear set and push that inside the cluster gear set to push out the shaft and once the shaft is out, the cluster gear set will fall to the bottom of the case together with the 3/4 inch copper pipe, which holds the roller bearings in place for latter installation- saves chasing the roller bearings.

On a '36 the cluster rollers should be the caged sort...the retaining tricks are need for '49 up.

Used the copper pipe method on a 38 transmission notwithstanding caged roller bearings.

Re: 1936 three speed transmisson tear down
Randy....you can call our office weekdays 9am to 6pm (Eastern Time) to order our book. The passenger car trannies changed a bit beginning, but the only difference is the longer mainshaft and tail housing. You have to rotate the housing 90 degrees to gain access to the countershaft in order to tap it out. The rest is pretty much the same procedures as the 46-48 trannies covered in the book..........Mac VP
