Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
What models will be desirable some 80 or 90 years in the future? Probably anything that requires constant driver attention and is powered by an ICE. That is if gasoline is even available 90 years out.

3ARDUN2 if you're talking about Gene Scotts' place in Rosemead, the yard was really out in Irwindale and that ain't it anyway.

More scrapped vehicles in the forties. A 1937 Ford Tudor Sedan on the right, plus a Packard. |

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
Something else to consider is that cars became obsolete much sooner in those days. I became quite aware of cars around 1960 at age 8 or so. I don't think I ever saw a model A or anything resembling one driving on the road except maybe a parade. Woulda been a 30 year old car. I still see plenty of cars and trucks from early 90's on the road every day. I understand road salt kills them early in many parts of the country, but they are fully 'modern' and useable.

I guess on the positive side it makes the survivors worth more. The one that always catches my eye is this scene in "The Dead Cars Place" on YT where a forkift drives it's forks through the windows of a good looking 53 Merc, much like mine. Man, I need that drivers door glass!

I know grown old guys aren't supposed to cry but all those "primo" coupe bodies pretty near bring me to tears ! BTW, where in the Hell are all the old stock cars that I watched in the "50's" hiding now ? There have to be some a guy could restore ?

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
When I was 8 or 9 I use to go to the Junk Yard on Saturday when the crew at the Junk Yard was not working. I would sneak in the back of the Junk Yard to see what goodies I could find. I would look under the seats, pull the rear seats and sometimes I would fine money, a dime or nickel and pennies. Once I found a small tin box with 4 dollars in it. But the big price was a gun. It was a 32 loaded in a oily rag under the seat. I still have it. I kept it hid for several years. Sometimes I would fine some small tools. Then one day I seen a man in one of the cars. He had turn black being dead for a long time. After that I was afraid to go out there junkin we called it. Hobo's we called them back in the old days. The railroad went pass the yard and that where the Hobo's came from.

I went up to the office and told them and I showed them where he was. They said they find them like that before. Then they chewed my butt out, and said I should let them know when I was in there. I also found a Bull's Eye Pocket Watch and it did not work. I took it to the Watch shop and he oiled it and it started to work. miss those days. I don't remember any 32 Fords back them.

I had an especially happy childhood, as I could get off the school bus at the town dump to do some shopping on the way home. They burned it once a week or so, so you had to keep up on what was in stock. Kids today are really missin out on the good life

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
XA Falcons have gone through the roof in NZ. People are asking 40 to 70 thousand dollars for ridgy didgy sedans, that is just bog standard saloons from 200 six, 250 six to v8 Fairmonts. Wish I still had my Aussie assembled copper bronze, vinyl roof bench seat, column auto, non power steering, 302C Falcon 500...who would have thought.

Watching mecum kissimmee auction. Restomods outpaced originals. Always will. It's a mind set. I want a "classic car", but it can't be like it was, I want it to be modern like my new car. Not to often you see a 32 with fenders.

Looks like a '41 Ford back to back with the one facing the crane. This one has a grill guard. .

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
GB if I was going to drop in a sbc in my car I would look for a 265 block to have at least some period correctness. or a stovebolt 6.
BUT Whatever gets you going and goes, I guess. Better to be weird, then the same old thing. Simon says a Big difference. . Last edited by Tinker; 01-18-2022 at 11:09 PM. |

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
Hey....I actually have a big spot in my heart for those old & nostalgic hot rod Chevys. Was just curious why you'd pick a 265 over an early 283. The real trick piece would be a '55 265, which is easily distinguishable from a '56 or '57 265. Now, do you actually have a way to visually differentiate between a '56 265 block and a '57 283 block? What is difference between '57 283 block & '58 283 block? Fun stuff, huh? DD . |

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
Being that I have a couple of good running flatheads. I guess I haven't made the effort to make the the difference beyond what I might do regarding sbc. Hypothetically I might just through a tesla motor in and wait ten yrs.
but its probably a few google searches away. It's not a secret. |

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
If it is, it's the best one I've ever seen. Usually, they're pretty obvious. The one thing that even leads me to consider it is the desirable mix of cars. Upon closer look, there is a Cadillac Coupe De Ville, a VW convertible, a Metropolitan, a '59 Pontiac convertible and others. Just about every car in the picture is desirable.

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
You might be on to something, Mart. That COE/box truck on the left, next to the '59 Buick sure is rather small compared to the cars around it. In fact, the old school bus behind the box truck seems too small, also. And that fencing material at the box truck and at the wrecker looks like that expanded aluminum that you see with filters, and that it looks like it has been cut at the top with scissors. DD . Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
These are some my friend Bob Sweet had. Probably some of you remember Bob he lived in Dayton, Ohio and dealt in a lot of NOS Ford parts. Last I talked to him he was in Kingman, AZ. He said the nice coupe in photo one was Olds powered. The 32 was really a rusty car. The last one although not Ford was Olds powered also. Really an interesting guy! Haven't talked to him in a while hope he is still doing ok into his 90's!

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
I’ve been at this since age 14; now almost 75!
I used to spend Sunday’s walking the boneyards. I remember Many 40-50’s cars being cannibalizes. It included many Tri-5 chevys including convertibles in the yard. Lots of 50-54 chevys. Many 283&327 engines as well as mopar hemi. They were pulled and kept inside. I also remember unfriendly goats and more unfriendly copperheads that you had to watch out for! |

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
About 30 years ago, there was a salvage yard on my way home from work. I'd stop occasionally to see if anything interesting had shown up. One time, he was busy burying a bunch of engines including a couple of dozen early hemis. Since I had one in my vintage dirt car, I asked if I could salvage some parts. I was mainly looing for the Bakelite spark plug insulators and the aluminum spark plug tubes.
He said "Nope, I'm almost done". Last edited by tubman; 04-06-2022 at 09:33 AM. |

Same thing but these 4,000 beauties never hit the road. What happens when you overturn a 656' RORO ship in St Simons Sound , Georgia 2019. Somebody's Arse is in a sling. Nobody killed! Cut the ship into sections using a huge chain and barged to Louisiana.

What was the name of the ship? I'd like to look up the incedent. I am curious about the huge chain.

1955 Chevrolet blocks do not have oil filters. You could get an oil filter as a bolt-on accessory.

Follow this Google Street link.
https://www.google.com/maps/@-39.343...7i13312!8i6656 This is Horopito Motors just out of Ohakune, NZ, still in full operation and is my Go-To parts place for my '31 Chev and '37 Ford V8. They have a second hand inventory that has to be seen to be appreciated. Started by the current owner's father back in the '30s. Street view only shows a small amount of the cars that are parked there. |

Well, that looks like a fun place ! Reminds me of an old yard in SoDak I used to go where they had sheep in the yard with the cars. It looked like a bunch of cars sitting on a golf coarse !

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
Well thanks guys. What a huge operation! And what an insurance claim! My dad was a marine insurance broker. He dealt mostly ships and cargos heading up to Alaska. He had some disaster tales to share at the dinner table now and then, but nothing like this.

Re: What a waste of good thirties Ford bodies.
Did not the early engines (265's) have side mounts built into the bell housing? I helped my brother put a 283 in his '55 pickup and that's the way the rear of the motor was mounted. No rear trans mount either. The transmission was just cantilevered off of the motor/bell housing arrangement.
