Did Ford use a different engine other than a 239 cu.in.in their heavy trucks
In the 1949 thru 1953? Maybe a Merc engine?

The F7 and F8 used a 337 Lincoln engine.

The step up from the 239 V8 was to a 254 flat-6 in the F-4 thru F-6.

Ditto on the 337 Lincoln and while I'm no automotive engineer, the inline six of similar displacement often has more lb ft lbs of torque than a V8. Perhaps a longer stroke, which I know helps or just a situation of basic design. Ask a guy with a cummins powered dodge. With less displacement they seem to hold their own against the diesel v8s.

Wasn't 52 the same year the OHV lincoln 279 was in heavy trucks? I had a 55 tandem axle road tractor. Was a T 750 big job. that had a 279 and a 5 speed main transmission with a 3 speed auxilary transmission.

In the early 60's I worked on 2 single axle trucks with GM491 with 4 speed trans and 4 speed aux.
If you missed a shift, you had to stop and start again.

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't fun to drive. I love having something to shift while I'm driving. In 46 years of driving I have only had two vehicles with an automatic transmission. I just meant it was a REAL job, not like some of today's trucks... I have great admiration for those that can row down the road with a couple of sticks and get them in sync. A dying art for sure!

This one a 56 332Y 4bbl Holley 5 X 4 power steering air. To shift these
you put your left hand through the steering wheel spokes and shift the
main while shifting the aux with the right hand. And you had better be
quick cause I know of no auxiliary with syncros....

You also had to be very careful to make sure you squared off the "h" shift pattern. Get a little sloppy and the linkage would bind.

Anybody know what the two tanks right behind the main tanks are for? On the truck being towed.
I've been driving a trailer truck since '83, I never got to try a "two sticker". Now there all automatics. Select "D", step on throttle and just sit there with your face hanging out...Mark

I used to drive a 1949 F 8 Fire truck with the 337 & 5 speed and liked it. Only used clutch to get out of station. Up or down was great and no problem. Fond memories. kx
