Thanks guys for the guidance on color. I painted the distributor cast iron and it looks great. So far new bushings, new breaker plate, wiring and points. Condenser checks out within specs. Waiting on a new vacuum canister to mount on the bench before I install the shaft/gear.

Before I insert the wick and oil cap, should I inject some oil in the hole first? Or just install the wick and oil that?

Put the distributor on the sun machine tonight. Set the dwell but couldn’t get the advance right on the second vacuum setting of 1.7. I think the springs are weak so I will have to source new ones. The springs were pretty rusty, so I soaked them in evaporust, but I think they are too far gone. I have the lugs on the plate adjusted to the max distance and I am still getting about 7 degrees of advance at 1.7 vs the spec of about 5 degrees. Will report back with new springs.

Yes, for the answer to squirt oil in before reinserting the wick.

If you have a Sun machine, then just order the new springs, then finish setting up the distributor yourself. It sounds like you have it under control.

I can't over state how much of a difference it made, when I rebuilt mine and had them set up on the Sun machine. New bushings, made all the difference in the world, along with the new wires, point and condenser.

Agreed, that 2-3 degrees of advance against spec has to make a difference. I have a set of 8EQ springs. Any idea why the 7RA distributor has two different springs and the 0BA has two 8EQ springs? The vacuum canister and breaker plate are the same. Seems like the 8EQ springs should work….

I guess the quick answer is that they define the curve… if you advance the mechanism to it’s full extent you’ll see the spring closest to the vacuum can is parallel to the line of travel and the spring furthest away is oriented at 45 deg. The close spring affects the entire range of the advance the one at 45 is biased more toward the upper end of the curve.
