Question Brake Drum Question 1928 Tudor

I miked the thickness on my brake drums and got the following readings from .085 thous. to .110. Acording to Les Andrews book anything less than .120 is unacceptable. I was thinking about using the reinforcement bands on all four drums. Would this solve my problem? I have several ,extra, used drums but none will clean up at .120.
Thanks

I would go for some drums that are useable.. they are out there ...even nos ones...advertise and search... Brakes are not something to skimp on...

I have used the bands on marginal sized drums before, but took time to measure out and mark the diameters of each drum in various locations, and did the same with the rings. To alleviate screwing things totally, I found it important to mark out the smallest diameter of the ring, so it could be matched for fitting to the largest outside diameter of the drum. Theoreticaly to help bring the drum to a closer true diameter, before clean-up machining. Brake shoes will still have to be individually matched to each drum, as each drum may turn out to be different diameters, from one to another.

It has been my experience that the bands will not help since the drum wall thickness is below limits. New cast iron drums are really the best way to go. There are a number of suppliers and you can check the Fordbarn threads that have covered the subject. I supplied all the labor when I installed new drums on my hubs. It is not a difficult job if you have at least a 25 ton press available to use for swaging the hub bolts. Gar Williams
