Default 38 Ford South Wind heater

Just took delivery today of my 38 2-door. It has a South Wind heater. I am wondering if any of you actually use these and how reliable and safe they are. Anyone know what model they are? I don't really plan to use it, but would like to know if it works. I found a manual on line for one that is a Model 781-B. It seems to be the correct one for a 38 Ford. All help and suggestions appreciated. I would like to know how to add an avatar to my posts. Thanks

I had one in my '35 coupe. They work way better than hot water heaters. Instant heat.
They are very reliable. Don't let your passenger ride very far with his shoes under the heater; it will melt the shoe polish.

The Southwind was never a correct heater for any Ford, although a popular model on many cars of all early years, especially in very cold climates. I’ve never heard of safety concerns about them, but I wouldn’t say perfectly safe, as of course, gasoline is the heat source.

The SW heaters were an aftermarket item not made by Ford so as ford38v8 stated it would technically not be correct for your Ford.

The Southwind is a great hearer. I have one in my Avatar. Many are plugged up with lead salts from leaded gas and therefore don't work. I have quite a few NOS parts, and have repaired a few of them, but I'm not in the business. If I can help, let me know. Lawson

Terry, with an Avatar name like yours, are you into CW reenacting, or maybe into searching for CW relics? Just curious, as I am into the later....searching part of the hobby.

I am a North South Skirmisher. Competition shooting. Not a reenactor. I used to be director of the National Civil War Life Museum in Fredericksburg VA. Now I am into old cars anj just added a 1938 Ford 2-door. Love it.

Okay, thank you for clarifying. I thought you were possibly into searching for Civil War relics. I'm a member of several relic searching groups/club's here in Maryland, and we frequently search in the Fredericksburg and Petersburg areas of Virginia.

Welcome to the Fordbarn, and congratulations on picking up that nice looking '38 Tudor sedan.
