56 Door retainer pin?
Do not know if I asked this or not so here goes. Getting ready to pull the doors off. There is a retainer? that keeps the door from opening too far. It is held on with a pin. I can grind it off and get it out but then what to replace it with?

Re: 56 Door retainer pin?
Thanks for the link. Hopefully it will come back up for sale
Hah, actually cheaper factory direct Now to get the pin out. Ground off the bottom part that was flared out but it is stuck good. Tried a drift punch, no go. May have to try heating it unless someone has a better option. Last edited by 56sedandelivery; 04-11-2022 at 03:29 PM. |

Re: 56 Door retainer pin?
When I took my doors off, I used an electric drill with a bit that was a little smaller than the diameter of the pin. I drilled the pin from the bottom upwards about 1/8 inch deep. I had to hold the top of the pin with a small pair of vice-grips while drilling so the pin would not spin around while I was trying to drill it.
After that, you can crush the last little bit of the bottom of the pin inward and pull it straight out. I used a pair of electricians pliers to crush the pin all around. Of course the pin is un-usable after that. At the time when I was redoing my car, I bought replacement pins from one of the repro parts suppliers. The new ones are a little different, their pins are a little longer and have a retainer clip at the bottom so the pins can't fall out. |

Re: 56 Door retainer pin?
I will have to try the drill as I ground the bottom even with the bracket and it is stuck tight. Vice grips will not even make it move. May have been wrong to try and grind the bottom. If that does not work may grind off the top and see if that works.

Re: 56 Door retainer pin?
TeeBird Auto has them like Paul says... at least that is where my replacements came from on my car.

Re: 56 Door retainer pin?
Got some on order. I ended up grinding off the pin head and it popped right out
