oil flow
Morning guys , I have a 55 ford 272, have read lots on lack of oil problems to rockers . With engine running how much volume of oil should you see? I see oil coming out the holes in the rocker shafts, but very little coming out the tubes at the end of the shafts.. This my first y block and am more used to a sbc which seems to have a lot more visible flow .. thanks for your thoughts Fred

Re: oil flow
If all of them are getting oil there is no problem. The center cam bearing is where it comes from and it has to travel though small passages to get to the rocker shafts. The rockers & shafts have to have clean & clear passages to get it to all the arms. If flow stops for some reason, it should become noticeable pretty quick. Cam bearings can spin in the block if the fit is poor or the rpm is too high and the bearings can wear causing low oil pressure too.
Solid lifter engines run with a bit of lash noise all the time. It's just the way they were made. If one gets too much wear then you will hear it. They all can use a lash check now and then. Use good quality oil and change it per the normal schedule and all should be well & good. Warming the engine all the way up and running it that way for a good bit will usually keep the engine in good shape. Short runs with no warm up can cause a lot of sludge build up. |
