Door skin oil canning
Before it all fell off into a bottom of the door my F1 doors had a bitumen like material stuck to the inside of the skin, I dont know if this will help with the problem but does anyone know what it was and what do people use now, thanks.

Re: Door skin oil canning
sound deadening, sort of like a tar substance, a lot people glue an insulation materiel in it's place or even spray on undercoating

Re: Door skin oil canning
Here's what folks are now using as sound deadening material. It's a "peel and stick self adhesive" covering.

Re: Door skin oil canning
I used a peel and stick stuff thats for patching leaky gutters. Available at lowes, 6" wide rolls, very cheap compared to the dyna mat type of products.

Re: Door skin oil canning
Get a gallon of roofing patching cement at Home Depot, it comes closest to matching original product, cheap and easy to apply.

Re: Door skin oil canning
I use a heat gun…..no flame..to remove that stuff when necessary. Heating only to soften and scrape with putty knife. Yes too much heat does sheet metal wrong!

Re: Door skin oil canning
Before you embark on any shrinking or stretching, THOROUGHLY understand what is happening with the metal, where and why. I have had to fix things a novice tried to "rough in" or save time which did the opposite. Just sayin. Maybe you know someone with experience that can help and teach you how to remove the oilcan.
If you look at my MISC folder, you will see the job (my 34 sedan delivery) that taught me the most, with lots of advice from old time bodymen as to what to do first and why. Last edited by deuce_roadster; 05-07-2022 at 03:20 PM. |

Re: Door skin oil canning
Listen to Duece Roadster. Did the insulation coating on inside of doors get blasted to remove? If so there’s the problem. (Ask me how I know). Very difficult to fix. Adding insulation material back will not fix it.

Re: Door skin oil canning
On our F1 build, the media blaster tried to clean all that off and warped the sheet metal. Our sheet metal guy had to add supports inside the door to hold the crown. Panels like the hood and doors, and even the back of the cab are really sensitive and prone to warping.

Re: Door skin oil canning
yes fix the problem 1st but as to what to apply afterwards there are several choices 1 body shutlz [black spray on stuff often used as salt proofing] 2 spray on body [tub] liner 3 cork gasket sheeting or floor tiles 4 sound deadening or carpet underlay etc etc the choice is as endless and varied as your imagination sometimes to reduce noise and others to insulate against heat or cold at sixty five with 50 years around transport i still get amazed with human ingenuity around problems [got told years ago "open your eyes shut your mouth and learn if it works it aint stupid"

Re: Door skin oil canning
Is the problem oil canning or bitumen failure?

Did 32 roadsters come from the factory with the bitumen coating inside the body?

Re: Door skin oil canning
Before a panel is painted you can heat a few small heat shrink spots red hot, one at a time, the size of a dime and quench them with a wet rag. I have really small #00 an #000 gas torch tips I use so I don't overheat the panel and warp it too bad. Just a few of those well placed heat shrinks and the skin will get as tight as a drum. You might want to explain to anybody under 30 what oil-canning is since they grew up with plastic oil bottles. I showed my 35-year-old son-n-law an oil can spout and said," what's this tool used for". He didn't have a clue. He can't inherit my cars or my tools. My best hope is to teach my 4-year-old grandson about how things worked in the "olden days".

Re: Door skin oil canning
I had a 40 coupe years ago ... it was an unfinished project and was painted bright yellow. I didnt like the colour and stripped it off😣... the body was solid but some moron had sand blasted it and wrecked every panel on the car. I used a small oxy- propane torch to heat shrink the damaged areas just to get some integrity into the metal to allow the panels to be filled. My metal working skills didnt stretch to repairing back to factory finish and it took me ages to get that car straight enough for paint.
When Id done with the heat and shrink the body looked like a leopard , covered in penny sized blue dots all over it. |

Re: Door skin oil canning
"Oil canning" class now in session......
Oil cans of old (see pic) had a bottom that was stretched which when pressed would flex forcing oil out of the spout. The bottom would then return to the pre flexed condition. The flexing is identical to what a stretched body panel will do when pressed. In severe conditions the panel may remain in the flexed low/high, in/out position however. There are various heat shrinking methods that can help bring the stretched panel back to or close to the original contour depending on some conditions.
