The second pic looks like a full class. I don’t think many schools even offer auto shop classes now. Some nice shop equipment in the first pic. Is the instructor wearing a beret or a cap on backwards? Maybe that’s what the guys in front of him are laughing at…….Mark

Looks like the instructor is wearing a news boys hat or a stroker hat. Those are some neat pictures for sure and, no, shop classes aren't taught in school any more. That is probably why so much of our stuff comes from overseas nowadays. So sad.

I'd give my left nut for that square base pedestal grinder in the background. At that age I wish I could have gotten an education like in these photos too. Everything I know about Vehicles I had to teach myself and that was mostly from books and car magazines. Now we have the net, but no portly, backwards beret wearing instructor.

High school shop classes, including automotive, are rarely found in schools today. Too expensive to operate and they bring no "academic glory" to the Principal who is now under pressure to focus on math, science and and God only knows what else. I saw it happen at my high school. Kids today are getting short changed, for sure.

One new trend I am seeing at least in GA, is different high schools focusing on different paths. For example my teenage daughter goes to what is essentially a technical, career focused high school. The school has no sports teams and the only standard elective it has is PE. The rest is all core classes and electives are focused on their chosen career path. Her school has Pilot (Aerospace), Graphic Design, First Responder, Networking/Security, Hospitality, etc.

I took auto shop in high school and loved it. My teacher retired the same year I graduated and they shut the program down when he left.

Many laments for the lack of shop classes. I enjoyed mine. My son, who is now an engineer, loved the hands-on classes he had, including robotics. Many reasons for the lack of these classes, some good, some not so good.

If that was a color photo you would see that it was actually a raspberry beret. The kind you find in a second hand store.

I looked up 'Raspberry beret in Turkey'. Seems they are a well respected group
of special forces in Turkey. They don't like to be called 'maroon beret', which is a description many give them.
