Hi all,
I had to drill out a door hinge to body screw on my '46 coupe because it was 77 years old and prepping for paint. Anyway, now I can't find a replacement.. 5/16 24 X 1" slot head. Does anybody have any idea where to find one? If anyone is parting out a '46 to 48 car and can remove one of 4 screws I sure would be appreciative. I found one on eBay for $19.95 stainless, one would think it was a precious metal!

My ‘46 Mercury (same body as Ford) has oval Phillips screws for all the hinges to the body. And I think that Michael Driskell at Thirdgen has them. The lower hinges to cowl post have loose nuts and lock washers… a real pain to install without dropping pieces into the inner panel. I had to retrieve them countless times with a magnet.

I had the same problem with the lower hinges. Yes, a magnet came in mighty handy... As for the 2 bolt upper hinge screws, I don't mind changing to phillips head but they must be flat to allow the hinge to close on itself.

fordy6: You will have to use screws with countersunk heads so as to get the hinge to close on itself.

I used countersunk cap screws; seem the easiest to find in SAE thread.

The hex recess could be welded and a straight slot cut in the head with a cut-off wheel if originality was necessary.

My '46 Super Deluxe has different heads between the top and bottom hinges, as seen the the pics. Both doors are the same, but after 77 years, it may be possible that they were change out at one time. Two different head types from the factory doesn't make sense, but I'm sure someone on the barn can comment.

This brings up a curiosity question: When did Ford start using Philips head screws anywhere on the car? I know they were non-existent in 1940.

GM started using them in 1937. I think (not sure about this) but Ford used them after WW2

My '46 coupe has the same fasteners...slot head on top and phillips on the bottom and that's what I am looking for the top screw a 5/16 24 x 1" screw!

Check your local hardware store. If you have a good Ace store they probably have them.

JayChicago, per the Early V8 Club 41-48 book, 1946. I didn't find one Philips head screw on my 1942 Ford coupe as I recall.

I stand corrected. Looked at the 42 today and regular screws at the top hinge with Philips on the bottom hinge on both sides.
