Gloss powder Coat to Semi-Gloss?
I have a suspension part that was incorrectly gloss powder-coated by the supplier that I want to change to semi-gloss paint finish?? I do not want to sand blast or burn off the gloss - was hopeful that the gloss surface could be sanded or prepared so that a semi-gloss black paint finish could be applied and "stick"?
Anyone have this experience with success? |

Re: Gloss powder Coat to Semi-Gloss?
Give it a scrub with 0000 steel wool
That should dull it just a bit |

A fine Scotch Bright pad may work also but both will probably leave fine lines. If the part is under the car they probably won't show anyway.

I have painted right over powder coated wheels with single stage paint( didn’t like the shade of red).
No scrubbing no sanding, might have gone over it with a degreaser first. But they came out nice, and are holding up well. |

Do not use steel wool. That will leave the raw steel wool imbeded into the paint. A scotch brite is the choice. You are still going to need some type of primer to make the adhesion to the old paint anyway. Why not strip and start over.

The powder finisher can easily coat them once again without completely stripping them. Lastly, it appears authenticity is not important to you. Am I correct? If so, be aware that gloss black is correct for chassis parts including the frame.

Actually yes . I am concerned about finishes . but this question was for another project of mine where the suspension trailing must be semi-gloss and the powder coater made it gloss! Hoping that the advise regarding "scotch briting" the gloss, priming and then painting semi-gloss paint will work as I do not want to re-powder coat it. |

Scuff it with some 320 grit to dull the gloss. Clean with oil and grease remover. Paint away. Just did it with my F100 15" wheels. Use a hardener in the paint if using a paint gun.

There are numerous grades of Scotch Brite that are available to take down the gloss to whatever level you want for the finish.

You might try a mixture of Comet cleanser and water. Use a sponge or rag to wash the item.
Several years ago I worked at a facility that used powder coating for our finished product. We found the above method very effective to reduce the gloss. |

Re: Gloss powder Coat to Semi-Gloss?
What DavidG said x2--3m scuff pad. Everything I get powder coated I get powder primed first. 2 coats of powder is very common. I just had 4 wheels sandblasted and powder primed. I will scuff pad them and paint to match the car. You can paint over the gloss after scuffing it if you don't want to powder coat them again.
