Default 1940 seat adjuster

Should there be some type of return spring on the seat adjuster, or is it just friction /pressure that keeps the adjuster handle seated (pun) in the track?

Supposed to be a compression spring between the tab on the lever and the tab on the pivot bracket.

Does anyone have a picture of this spring and how it's fitted?
