What are they worth.

I have a line on a 1935 5 window coupe, metal is very nice. Brakes have been converted to Hyd. 85 hp very restorable. Just trying to get a ballpark price. I don't have any pics to post. Also a 35 truck with a flatbed. Body is rough. Fenders are rusted thru at fender support.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

They are in a estate. I have first rights to purchase. The coupe was appraised between $8,000 unfinished and 18,000 finished. The flatbed came in at $2,000-3,000.

I have pics. and Questions... When they converted the brakes to hyd, does the backing plate get replaced. Also this engine, the water pumps are attached to the heads. On my other 85 they are on the block.

Yes the backing plates have to change with hydraulic brakes, you should be able to see the wheel cylinders and hoses. The early engines had the water pumps in the heads.

Hyd backing plates will have a hole for the wheel cylinders to mount, so yes, they will be changed. a 1935 should have come with a 21 stud engine and the pumps bolt to the heads, later 24 stud, about 1939 they went to a block mounted pump with integral motor mount. Looks like a nice car, keep us posted.

This thread is an excellent example of how NOT to buy a barn find.

Unless you've already bought the car, PAID for it, and have taken it HOME, you should consider deleting at least that photo of the license tag.

I have a '35 coupe and nearly lost the buy because I told a "friend" I was arranging for a check to be sent from my bank ... never told him where it was, nothing.

He found it and told the seller I was only bullshitting, and he tried to buy it.

Fortunately the guy selling the car for the widow already knew his reputation.

You should already know that the car is worth more than $8,000 ... and posting it here to have someone tell you, "$6,000 for the lot, just my 2 cents" is embarrassing to serious early ford guys.

Plenty of folks will screw you for cars not that nice.

That is sound advice from Hoop, I would hope that doesn't happen yet is possible! Please post pics and share info once they are both in your driveway. My coupe in avatar was a basket case needing FULL restore and I paid $8000. If all else it would be a good investment.

Big question is ... do you want this car for yourself with plans of restoring it? Or, do you want to sell/flip it? You already have a good, honest Ford Barner, "tubman" interested.

Or, if you're not that crazy about the car, I'll bet "tubman" would pay a birddog fee for your help. I mention that so the car can sorta stay "in the family."

It's not good to sit on these deals. Word gets around, and it'll end up with a SBC in it.

I very interested in the coupe. The truck is going to one of their family members... I just didn't have much info/knowledge on the 35. I plan on finishing the restoration. I'm keeping it. I will provide a good home for her. I will not rod it. Thanks for all the input. Finishing the deal today!

ASAP is not too early for this Coupe! Good luck. Keep it to yourself or some scoundrel will step in and you'll be holding the short stick I guarantee it. Happened to me years ago I learned to keep my mouth shut after that, and work QUICKLY with cash don't let the owner be swayed by 'advice' from others.

I can name a few that would push their own mother out of the way to snag that car out from under someone. A few are fordbarn members!

I made a deal along time ago to buy a roadster and couldnt sleep for 4 days till I had it loaded on the rollback and the title in my hand. One was that someone else would step in and the other was the seller would change their mind and not sell it

35's and 36's are really exciting to get home and REALLY check to see what you got.

In a lot of cases, the deal has to be made fairly quickly, and there isn't time to check some of the details.

Like which engine do you have. 35's are ideal candidates for transplanted LB engines while 36's give you about a 50/50 chance of insert bearings. Hard to check at the time of sale.

Transmissions ... upgraded to blocker style or not. Maybe an LZ in there.

Rear end is the same. Usually don't check until it's home.

Can be some pleasant surprises. Worst case it's all stock which has its own virtues.

Ok all... She's safely in my shop.!!! And yes I did remove the engine from that stand. Thankful they never got rammy with it! Some extra holes in the firewall. The underside looks super.

So on the interior. Is that done mostly correct? Just curious. It looks pretty nice. A little tlc on some areas.

So, I'm restoring a 37 and have that great book on the 1937's Do you know if there is one for the 35's?

Must of had a set.of.swing pedals In it at one time. That fire wall hole is for a 53-56 style master cylinder. What is that on the passanger side frame next to the transmission? Best fix is a 39 pedal if your keeping the juice brakes

Master cylinder is on the passanger side, how is it hook to the pedal? Is it using part of the stock ljnkage to the right front wheel?

If I can see them good enough looks like 49-50 Plymouth side gauges and early 60s Chrysler brand master cyl.

Hey, congratulations on finding such a nice old Ford and bringing it back to life. That's all about what's good with our hobby. Also very nice that your son has an interest in this car. He is about 2 years older than I was when I bought my first 35 coupe, just about 58 years ago, and I still have a passion in my heart for these old Fords, especially the 35's. Hopefully I helped you out somehow, in some small way, to get your car back up and running again.

Many folks that appraise the old cars may or may not know what actual values are. How complete it is and condition of the sheet metal are the most important factors. Modifications like hydraulic brakes are common so most folks don't care one way or the other since it is easy to convert back to mechanicals if a person want to.

The fact is that coupes of all years are popular and bring more money than sedans. A good condition, running, and driver quality coupe can run more than 18K. A well restored 35 deluxe coupe can run a LOT more than 18K.
