Default Big parts purchases via the internet

If you are planning of making any large purchases of parts via the internet you might want to do it ASAP.
The supreme court just ruled that states can force companies that do not do business in your state to collect sales taxes.
This will change the hobby even more.
I m not sure if the ruling is retro active or not.

saw that as well..
definitely going to hurt small businesses. undoubtedly someone will develop an app to track and collect tax.. and charge small businesses to use it.. win for some? loss for all?

What if your state does not have a sales tax?

If your state does not have a sales tax you probably won't get taxed on items purchased

There are only five states WITHOUT any sales tax...….Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana, Oregon and Alaska. DD

Taxes though helpful to communities have become a drag onto the economy & a slush fund for politicians..

The Australian Tax Office has just introuced a new law requiring US companies that turn over $75,000. Per annum to collect a 10% sales tax on all sales under $ 1000. Commencing on the 1st of July and remit to the ATO monthly. It is my understanding there are a few Ford parts suppliers that will no longer be supplying us with parts due to the extra paperwork and compliance. Dave

Here in Oregon the "Boarder Sales" is BIG business! And the 'down under' fellows will need an 'Agent' to manage their purchases. I see a business opportunity, aye? I've followed loads of building materials across State lines many times. Newc

So now smuggling will have to apply to everything shipped to Australia?.. Talk about greedy government!

I used to work for a company here in Canada and we were forced to collect and remit taxes for several states when we sold and shipped to somebody in that state. Across borders! Either that or we were not allowed to do business in those states.

It's aimed at amazon and other online sellers. Big T push, more taxes... I guess it's good

Walmart was a huge T campaign contributor. politicians are always politicians.

Just the beginning of the hike. Rollbacks of laws made to protect, are the shackles.

I won't go into the dismantling of US FDR national "public" land either.

Just bought a couple small items off Ebay for the farm and got hit with tax at checkout. Every time an item changes hands now it will be taxed and pretty soon the tax paid will be more than the item cost new.

Tinker...I hate to start political arguments, but the Walton family supported Hillary Clinton in 2016, donating around $714,000 to her campaign and the Democrats. Two of the Waltons each gave $354,000 to the Hillary Victory Fund. The Walmart Foundation and the Walton Family Foundation each contributed between $1 million and $5 million to the Clinton Foundation. The Waltons did not contribute anything to the Trump election effort.

This is basically still just a president since it is early after the recent SCOTUS decision but it did open the door. Where this is going is up to the states affected and the US Congress. The problem with it is that it literally opened a very large barrel of worms. If it is pressed, internet sellers will have to pay the taxes to any affected state that they sell into. This is almost an impossible thing to do. They will be running out of checks and stamps pretty quick. The SCOTUS evidently didn't think this thing through very well since is will close down internet sales for the most part. It's going to have an affect on a lot of catalog sales as well. This isn't going to work out well. I just wonder how long it will take the government to figure it out? This thing will affect red states as much as blue ones.

It's going to take a while for this decision to settle out. For a retailer, it's probably a no brainer as they have to collect tax for sales in their home state and a simple computer program for taxes in other states should be avaialble although the compliance situation (reporting and remitting the tax to each state) has a major money and time cost. For ebay sales, some sellers already collect tax in certain instances so that doesn't seem to be a problem (except for the compliance situation).

For a hobbyist that occasionally sells it can be a nightmare if there is no exclusion for occasional sales. Sales like ones made through individual sites like this one are likely to fly under the radar
