The brake rod return springs serve a dual function of applying tension against the brake rods to reduce rattling, as well pulling the brake actuating arms back to the home position. If Ford could have gotten away without installing these return springs, he could have saved a ton of money building 5,000,000 Model A's x 0.50 cents per car (?) + factory line assembly time = $2,500,000 saved. How long does it take YOU to save 2.5 million dollars? Ford must have thought the springs were necessary enough to eat the expense. We should, too.

I always bend the springs a little more to increase the tension against the ball in the brake rods.
