engine noise
Finally got the 59 ab to idle after putting the orginal cam back in,fired up on first rev and set there and idled like it should.as i turned down idle i noticed a noise in engine ,dont think it is a valve, heaver than that, goes away at fast idle, took out the fp push rod ,no change, have a set of edmonmds heads and ck for valve clearence ,engine was rebujilt not long before i got it .vac is steady @about 16 in, oil pressure is unsteady @about 18 lbs at idle, about a 1 lb movement any ideas

Re: engine noise
Sounds like piston noise? Dose the noise go away or diminish after warm up?

Re: engine noise
Did you say that you checked for clearance or are you taking somebodys word on it. Piston might be hitting the head. Now that you have it narrowed down I'd pull the head and have a look.

Re: engine noise
I checked head clearence myself.no noise does not go away, gets a little worse after warmup.goes away on fast idle and reving engine some cant hear it and very smooth.doesnt sound like a valve.what about a wrist pin?

Re: engine noise
well you said it goes away with the spark plug wire off correct? if so i go with either wrist pin, connecting rod bearing or piston slap problems....the reason why is that with the plug not firing the internal pressure is so much lower and those noises arent heard. under combustion pressure then those areas get alot more force.

Re: engine noise
the oil press goes obove 30#,off scale at fast idle so dont know if it fluciates. i didnt want to hear any of the above, this engine hasnt been anything but a pain in the But. Good thing i dont have the body on, not to bad to take out ,but i think i will have to drop the pan and check rod bearing first.

Re: engine noise
heavy knock and flucuating oil pressure , i would think mains, but on the other side of things when a knock goes away with a plug wire pulled thats an indication of rod bearings, looks likk your going to have to pull one head and pan to try and find the problem

Re: engine noise
Don,
Been there a couple times.....bite the bullet and prepare to find babbitt in the pan. A wrist pin is a bit more 'rattley' sounding. Charlie ny |

Re: engine noise
You did not state bore. A big bore with stock headgasket will have interference with the pistons and gasket.
