Question Swedging and turning drums

Hello All,

Does anyone know who can do this in the High Desert, IE, OC or LA basin? I also need a place to have my spindles honed for new king pins.

How much should I expect to pay for these services?

Regards
Bill

Randy Gross is the name I keep seeing in regards to Model A drum brakes in the LA area. I'm going to get a set of drums on my hubs from him pretty soon.

Our club tool box has the reamer to do king pins, so I did my own. They have a nice snug fit now.

BTW, I'm using a temporary front end on my 28, and the king pins are so worn that I can move the tops of the tires in and out about an inch, and yet the car steers great, and has never had the death wobble.

Most any automotive machine shop can hone the king pin bushings.

They can do it with the same machine they use to hone piston pin bores.

I think honing king pin bushes is fine but use a reamer first. A hone will only follow the shape that is already there. If it is out of round or even a burr on the bush from fitting it, the hone will leave the ID out of shape. Ream it till you have a full cut and stop while it is a bit too tight. A ream is fine from there on but make sure you don't leave the bush too tight. You will never control the car when you hit the road.

Yes, you need to use a rigid hone rather than a flex hone. I'm very satisfied with using a reamer.

Does someone have a part number for the reamer? Where to purchase?

Snyders has them... others may also..

My friend who has helped me throughout learning about Model A's had one, not exactly like Snyder's but it worked great....we did mine and they turned out really nice.

If you get one of the repop kingpin kits get some extra shims..I needed them as the repop pins are the tiniest bit longer than the originals....
