Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Have fun with that one this weekend. I'll bet you find one of the usual old Ford issues causing the no start and/or no run problem.

I hate driving around without a shirt on... My back always sticks to the seat.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I brought a fuel pump over to the garage (where the '47 Lincoln is), and we decided to try and get it started. I don't know if I mentioned this but, someone had installed a strange battery that looks like two 6 volt batteries joined together as one, along with a device that looks like a large solenoid and/or voltage reducer, with wires going all over the place a real Rube Goldberg set up... Well, we put a charger on the battery and almost instantly three of the cells on one side started to percolate... next, smoke started coming out of one of the wires going from a small terminal on the battery to the voltage reducer... And we all know that if you let the smoke get out of the wires, nothing will work...
After seeing this, my suggestion was to remove all the ancillary electronics, get a 6 volt battery with 6 volt "heavy" cables, and we'll give it another try. So, it looks like we'll have to wait until next Monday at the earliest to get back under the hood of the Continental. Maybe tomorrow we can get the transmission out of the '51 F-1.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Did you get apicture of the Rube Goldberg wiring. It would be a good example of how NOT to do something. To bad the smoke got out. No getting it back in when that happens.

No photo Chuck, it was just too screwed up to even want to post a picture of it. It looks like someone wanted 12 volts to crank the engine and revert back to 6 volts to power everything else... They threw ten pounds of crap at a one pound problem and made it a bigger problem... The car was recently painted (not a very good job ) so I'm sure most, if not all, the grounds have been compromised... We'll get everything back to the original 6 volt positive ground with good grounds and I'll bet everything will be just fine.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I agree. Good cables and grounds will make things right with 6 volts. It's still worth a picture for reference.

If I get over to the shop on Monday I'll take a photo before we rip everything out...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I remember a battery set up like you discribe. It was two 6volt batteries in one case it used a sol to connect the 6v batt's in series to give 12v for starting and 6v for running. They were a bandage for other problems.as is using 8 volt batteries.I haven't seen one of those in years.Phil

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Phil, I have seen 8 volt batteries but this is the first time I ever saw a set up like this. You are right about them being a band aid, the problem is they don't fix the original problem and usually end up creating more problems... Vic

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic, post 688, I love you man!
Agree, a lot of fellas have jiggered systems because they didn't know enough to put them back to the way they were originally, which IMHO usually works pretty well. (For some reason I'm thinking about Wzorek rebuilt shocks vs. tubes.) Sending the car through the line at Mecum's was probably a hint. Any idear what it traded hands for? It sure is a cool example of a 12 cyl, and a Continental Coupe at that! Last summer Dad, JM and I worked on a 36 phaeton almost a twin to ours, and it had a fuel pump, aftermarket coil, electric fan, and other stuff that was getting in the way of it working like it should. Removing a few of those newer pieces got it running in a couple of hours. Sadly the car is likely sitting right where we left it after taking it around the yard for five minutes. The owner has issues. Ditto Chuck L's comments about the firm and big-wire grounding on 6V systems. That is usually Job #1 from my perspective. -VT/Jeff |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Jeff, I always say; "I may be crazy... but I'm not stupid"! I know a lot about a little and a little about a lot but, I'm fairly well versed when it comes to V-12 Lincolns and that is why they called me... We'll have that car up and running in short order. Say hi to your dad & JM for me. Vic
P.S. Your Dash Plaques are going in the mail tomorrow.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic, I think the 'lot about a little' is just the little I want to know a LOT about! (Sorry Kube, you are also a hero.)
Showed this thread to my auto guru today and we were loving the tranny shots and commenting about just the one synchro. It seems like a year ago that the gearbox puked, oops, yes it was Jan 2012. -VT/Jeff BTW. I'd keep a couple of fire extinguishers nearby for the next few sessions. Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Jeff, when I get back over to the shop where the Lincoln is, first thing is to remove all the "garbage", check all the grounds and continuity and put in a good 6 volt battery. After we get her to crank and fire, we'll find out what else needs TLC, I'm sure the gas tank, fuel pump, carb, etc. will all have to be tended to, to some degree. While I was in the car I noticed that the shifter was very stiff... a quick look at the linkage at the firewall revealed a dry Zert fitting so you know the bushing is dry... little things like that... it just needs to be gone through and I'll bet she'll be a fine driver. I'm looking forward to getting her out on the road...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic, Get things in writing. Please. We've found some folks that can fix bushings like on the brake shafts. PM or call for more.
