Stromberg Carbs 81s 97s & 48s
I know a little about these Carbs. I had a good friend that asked me why I was USING 97S on multi carb setups. He only used 48s due to their larger size = more CFMs. I run three 48s with no progressive linkage, Works great for me. I would like to know what year ford started using the 97, and I have heard that the 48s were only used for one year. If this is true what year were the 48s used. I know that the 81s were used on the V8 60HP engines only I think that ended in 40 or 41. Thanks Stan White

Ford started using the 97 in 1936 and the 48 in 1935

I'm not an authority on this, but I believe the 48 was used in '34, and the 97 from '35 thru '38. In 1939 ford switched to all Ford/Holley carburetors including the V8-60. The last V8-60 was 1940.

Yes, the 48 was first used on the '34 model year....

32-33 used a Detroit Lubricator. I believe the switch from 48s to 97s was for economy.

The picture of the Detroit Lubricator carburetor is for 1933. The 1932 model did not have the hand choke linkage on the passenger side.

The Stromberg model 40 was used in 1934. It is nearly identical to the 48 without any model marking and just a couple internal changes. Ford did not start introduction of the new year models with new carburetors, but phased the new Carbs. in service so there is some carry over into the next year.
The 97 offered slightly better gas mileage over the 48 and a summer and winter adjustment. |

Ford would never have dreamed his 48 carbs would have been developed to this state.
These have been modified to float less and have enlarged venturi's |

It is my understanding the the reason they are called "48" is that it comes from Fords part number for 1934.

Fords part number for 1934 is the prefix "40" and the prefix "48" is for 1935. The 97 carb was used in 1936. The 97 was for point 97 inches diameter of the venturi which made it slightly more economical than a 48 or a 40 carb. The 97 also had a two position accelerator rod position for winter and summer which had the potential to save fuel which the other two carbs did not have. Regards, Kevin.

single/ multi carb it doesn't matter the trick is to feed it not drown it most people dont relise but on a factory offered multi setup the carbs are actualy smaller than the single carb offering so the increase in cfm isn't that big
