Default MAFCA Social Media Page now welcomes Shay Model-As

For those that don't frequent MAFCA's Social Media page, it appears the Administrators feel it is appropriate that Shay Model-A replicas should be allowed to participate on the Model-A Ford Club of America's official social media page since afterall, the Shay looks just like a Model-A.

I cannot help but just roll my eyes and shake my head is disbelief when reading some of the points viewers have made on why they should be allowed. I guess that is where this hobby is heading...

That's not good. A Shay is not a Model 'A'. It's a pinto I believe.

There is a reason for everything, I believe their drive for membership and revenue opens the door to all kinds as long as they pony up. For the longest time the web site was a free advertising opportunity for a clown with a Model A business, every response directed the poster to his parts concern..the page does draw in the new model a owners and it’s interesting to spot trends..

LOL. That thread got pretty out of hand in a hurry. I posted short and sweet. "Shays are a facsimile" (at best).

Well, I guess it was bound to happen.
A couple years ago I took a coupe to the local cars and coffee events.
After securing a large coffee I returned to the coop and found a young man just looking at everything on my car. His initial comment was how different mine was than his. I thought he was referring to the OHV head, 5 speed and Halibrand rearend. Then he brought his over close to mine and I noticed it was a Shay. He had purchased it off the web for a pretty penny and was told it was an authentic Model "A".

I see him every now and then and we chat, he enjoys it, Good on Him.

If shays are accepted, as a 70’s look alike, then why not any other model A body(steel or plastic), with any kind of running gear! WTF!

As far as I know, no Shays are in this country and if someone tried to register one, the obstacles would be insurmountable. They wouldn't pass the engineering inspection that every car not previously registered has to undergo for a start. I think that last statement says plenty about them.

That kind of blows the hell out of their Mission Statement, "The Model A Ford Club of America, Inc. (MAFCA) is dedicated to the restoration, preservation and enjoyment of the Ford Model A and AA cars and trucks, as manufactured from 1928 through 1931."

I don't think it was meant to be a negative... & it's not like he's turning the group into a "shays" group... I just think that he's open minded to allowing Shays to participate in the group. We have a shay that comes on tour with us in our club. Doesn't take away anything from the other cars. The person who drives the shay knows his car isn't like the others and he points out the differences to people when they ask about his car.

My 2 cents which I know won't amount to much.

Both MAFCA and our local club charters state "You do not have to own a Model A to join, just have an interest in Model A's.

Our local Orange Co Model A club has quite an eclectic collection with a couple of Hot Rod appearing cars, there are 16 inch wheels, tube shocks, Weber and Stromberg carburetors, turn signals dozens of modern cars on tours at different times and at least one Shay roadster.

The owner of the Shay has back problems restricting work on his cars but he participates in the club and takes our "Pinto" jokes with good nature. I have recommended that another member with diminishing leg strength might consider a Shay to continue driving.

I love my Model A's and drive them as much as possible but I belong to the clubs to be with my friends which happen to be people not the cars.

I am not bothered by an occasional inquiry about a Shay but do not agree with a special forum.

Jordan, I agree. It also sounds like your club does not promote them, ...but respectfully accepts them (-likely no different than allowing any member to participate with their modern car on an outing or tour).

Jack, you should hear from a couple of veteran members of the Houston Model-A club give their opinion of Michael. I think these hobbyists who are local to Michael have him figured out.

Jack, for that very reason you mentioned, I finally blocked this "clown" (-supposedly a struggling lawn mower repairman turned self-proclaimed Model-A expert according to his local club members). I guess we should all be thankful they both these guys chose social media instead of Fordbarn to hang out, huh?? Interesting thought about spotting trends. It will be interesting to see how this next decade of caregivers deal with restoration and maintenance on their Model-As.

What’s ironic is the clubs drive to stay relevant and attract new members yet they mismanage a golden opportunity. Social media is where you get the younger owners, the people they need to survive. Administrators of sites like the MAFCA page can impart the clubs rules and be a force for developing these new owners to ‘take the reins” and lead the club into the future. It’s a phenomena of social media that page members look up to admins for leadership and direction, a perfect opportunity to outline the clubs rules and corral them into a cohesive group.

I have a couple of all original Bramwith Ford Model A's which look very much like an original Shay and so hopefully they will allow me to also join the MAFCA's Facebook group. My cars are all original and look just like a Ford Model A and a Shay. Here are some photos of my Model A's:

Hey, Shay's are collectible in their own right, but they are not Model As. As they are more than 25 years old, the AACA would welcome them. Although if you think about it, some of the modified A's we welcome to club activities may be just as far from being a Model A as a Shay is. Is a car with a B engine, overdrive, hydraulic brakes, fiberglass fenders a Model A?

Exactly.

I'm afraid I find 'clubs' generally not very attractive they tend to be pretty cliquish. I know the Shelby American/Mustang Club is REAL bad like that from first hand experience. Talk about unfriendly stuck up dudes

As long as MAFCA is adamant about the fact that "a Shay is NOT a Model A", I see no harm in allowing their owners limited participation.
Maybe some of the Shay owners will develop an interest in real Model As......

The difference is a Burtz engine is quite hard to tell from an original engine. A shay is obviously not a Model A to most.

The first run was 150 and they went in a flash. I'm sure the 800 will find homes quite easily now that there are a few out there running around and developing a great reputation. More accessories are available for them (like heads, oil pumps etc) too, which adds to the attraction IMO.
I have one of the 150 and I'm impressed I wanted something with a bullet proof bottom end for my long distance towing. These are the "Holy Grail" with plenty of strength built in to handle nearly anything an owner might want to do to it to get more power out of it.
All of that said, I have never seen a Shay and don't care if it stays that way.

A lot of seniors who collect need a easy to drive model a, there is a lot health wise that can stop a guy from enjoying a car that takes both hands and both feet to drive, the model a Shay is a way for that old friend in the club to enjoy his remaining time with friends… I understand why mafca would make the change. It’s more then just the cars. It’s people. that club has got to be 75% over 55-65? I will not bash it.

The SHAY was made because of the love of the MODEL A FORD. I have no problem with them or any custom either. How many people have a glass fender or deck lid on a driver. Lighten up

IIRC, the original licensing agreement between Ford and Shay dictated that no part on the shay could be dimensionally identical to any Model A Ford part; meaning that no part of a Shay could be interchangeable with any Model A part. Quite literally by design and contract the Shay was designed and built to NOT be a Model A.
