Default Let's see those 38 standards out there!

Often considered the ugly duckling of all the early V8's It is my favorite! 1938 was the first year that the standard and deluxe had completly different body styles, making the 38 standard a unique one year only body style.Almost seams as though Henry just used up all the remaining 37 bodies and just redesigned the front ,rear fenders and grill?? either way you just don't see many of them out there! So, show em if you got em! or share some neat to know facts about this often neglected model..

Here's one sitting a couple of miles from me. It's in Roseland, NJ sitting in a sea of old cars behind an eight foot high chain link fence. This is as close as you can get. No idea who owns it or anything like that.

Well, if we are going to show abandoned ones, here is one near me.Been sitting up on this hill for over 20 years."Gonna fix it up some day" he says.It was probably pretty solid back in the 80s.

I guess I've had the Standards and Deluxes mixed up. I always thought the Deluxes were the better looking models of the 1938 line up. I've been wrong. The Deluxes were the butterfaces of the bunch.

This coupe belongs to a good friend of mine. He restored it over several years and was a burnt out shell when he found it. Not many 38 standards in Australia, it had to be saved!!!

Got a story to tell you OK Here goes back in the early fifty's down at the local body shop I use to ride my bike down there. This fellow had a 38 coupe light gray with duals exhause on it. I sure did fall in love with that car. The fellow that had it worked at the body shop and went to the local college to become a teacher. I always remember that car. Then when I was having my 39 painted I was telling Jim the owner about that car. Jim inform me that he still had that car in his basement of his house in Columbis,Ohio. He was a principle of a High School there. When He comes to town Jim is going to call me to meet him again.I need to ask if Jim had is phone number or email address.I woukd love to see that car again. When Jim told me that he comes around the shop every now and then made goose bumps on my neck.I always remember what a nice fellow he was to take time to tell me about that car when I was a boy.

1938 Deluxe
This one has 'standard' hubcaps.
IMHO the '38' deluxe is the better looking of all pre-war Fords. The 'club coupe' was known as the 'ugly duckling' though.

I know of 2 38 standard coupes one in the Portland,Or.area and the other in Las Vegas (both street rods) that have the 39 style back end.I have talked to both owners and they told me they were late 38s.

They are out here, alright. Mine is in the front of the garage waiting to be put back together. Everything there, just needs paint first. Just! Why didn't I learn to paint like my youngest brother did? And what in the world is he doing living in Kansas? What nerve. Old pictures, taken the day that I bought it from Hoop and the day that I got the engine put in shape.

Good to see one at Honest Charlie's. I never miss an old car rally with my 38 standard coupe. Never missed a Coker Challenge in September either!
See you all at the 2011 Great Race, beginning in Chattanooge.
Come on guys get em out and drive em.
