Default Fabric on an all-metal top

Sometime in the last 80 years someone affixed a metal plate over the soft top opening on my car. Top restoration is one of those to-do's, but way, way in the future. Meanwhile I would like a more authentic look by gluing the fabric to the top.

Has anyone tried this and what type of glue was used?

One friend of mine had a PU done that way and he just painted the metal with bed liner paint. From 15 feet away, looks like fabric...

regular contact cement is what is used to glue down vinyl tops...thats what I would use.

Try Juliano's in CT, I believe they make such a kit to install stock looking roof on top of a "filled" one.
