Default Trans overhaul issue

I just rebuilt the transmission and have all new bearings (US made) and a new reproduction mains shaft. Transmission is fully assembled on a stand and functions fine. However observed an up and down motion on the input shaft. The shaft is not able to move up and down or sideways by hand. I put a dial indicator on the main shaft pilot shaft and the splined shaft. Both show 30 thousands run out. All I can figure is that it was machined improperly. Am I missing something else could be the problem?

W/the transmission in neutral, can you turn the shaft by hand?

the input shaft will have some up and down movement/play at the pilot bearing end of the shaft. the exact amount i don't know, but .030" is probably ok. others will have to comment on this number.
that is why the pilot bearing is in the end of the crank or flywheel, to support the front end of that shaft.

the bell housing alignment in relationship to the end of the crankshaft (runout) is crucial to this shaft being in alignment . make sure you check the runout on the crank-bellhousing.

problem found, I had a new input shaft but used the old output shaft. Took another trans that was apart and put that output shaft in and bingo everything was correct, no run out. As that shaft had damage from a bad roller bearing I ordered a new output shaft

Thanks
