Default 1951 8BA What Is It?

Attached are photos of a metal tab bolted to the bell housing of my 51 F1 Pickup. It is located where the brake pedal return spring would somehow hook to the housing. So what is it and what is it for? Is the spring supposed to hook to it? Above or below? Or does the spring go past it to the bell housing?
Help!

I don't believe it is home made, as the Shop Manual shows it on page 141.

I got my 8BA from a 51 F-2 and it had the same tab. It had a brake spring on it.

How did the brake spring hook to it?

It must not be very important, given the number of these engines that are out there that apparently don't have this plate.

Still, I really would like to know what it is for.
