Default We found a vendor

On many forums it has been said about rebuilding L heads to be expensive.
Some say $3000 $2500 etc. Well we found "Cleggs Engine.Com. A master
rebuild for 8BA EABs runs $824. Melling pump, cam, rods/ mains, pistons/rings
full gasket set. All USA major names. Perfect circle, Hastings,Fel Pro etc.
Check em out

Mercurys/Lincolns too

We do lots of flatheads, and depending upon condition of the engine when it comes in, the usual overhaul runs $2,500 to $ 5,000, if the crankshaft requires regrinding, etc. if someone claims to do a competent job for less than that, get the job outlined in writing setting out exactly what is proposed, and the extent of warranty, if any.

True, but average venders get 200 for pistons 200 lifters etc. the post was
only a affordable parts quote. Machining of course is extra. Unfortunately we can't get the labor rates compared to other areas. (tire kickers here).
John Q public doesn't understand the hard part is setup time. machining is
the easy part. Say boring cyl's for $100 a hole, they look at me as coming
from Mars so we get $45 a hole or take it somewhere else, and better fasten
their seat belt and a long wait with the button pusher shops who get a $100
cover charge to walk thru the door.....sam

A problem is a lot of machine shops will not work on an engine unless you allow them to supply the parts. I will not do that, I buy my own parts, but that limits the machine shops to one in my area that will work with me.

I usually pay for machining only and do my own assembly, although that's always been on modern Ford V8s. I don't have a problem letting the machine shop supply parts as long as I know the name brand they are using. Even if they have a markup every business is entitled to make a living.

Same here, but a lot of the engines I build are high performance and I want specific parts used. Selling parts is a major part of the income for machine shops and I don't mind paying more for the work to cover the parts markup. In the past this wasn't that much of an issue, but it is getting harder and harder to get a shop that will work with you. I have a good one but the guy is about to retire!!!

I like the machine shop to buy the parts whenever possible. They make a little money this way but if something goes wrong there is no question whose fault it is. If I was a shop I wouldn't guarantee something built using the customers parts of unknown origin.

I've found that the shops can get the same parts cheaper than I can because of their volume buying and tax ID, so after mark-up it's not much different than me buying them. Even true when I tell him what brands I want. Plus they have more leverage if there's a problem.

That's the other issue, most shops want to assemble the engines! and that is definitely not happening!!! Guess I need to get my own boring bar etc. It wasn't a problem in years past, but it is getting to be one now.
