Thumbs down Water Pump Rebuild

I just scored 2 48 Ford Passenger chrome water pumps and 2 rebuild kits. Can anyone take me thru the step by step process of rebuilding these pumps? Thanks in advance. Roger

I rebuilt my 50 Merc pumps last year. I had never done these before either. All you really need is a small press, and some bits and pieces to support the pumps while pressing. Make sure you support the pulleys, or you will break them. Make sure you use a LITTLE heat while taking things apart and warm the impellers before you press them on the shafts. Make sure you check the impeller I.D. and the shaft size BEFORE you try to assemble the pumps. My impeller I.D. was about 0.0015 too small ! You only need 0.001 for a press fit. Just look at the pumps, everything is pretty straight forward, not very complicated at all.

What kind of seals and bearings are furnished with the new rebuild kits from the major vendors? I know that Skip uses modern stuff and was wondering if the new rebuild kits had any upgrades in this department?

Here's a link to my web site where I have written up an article on rebuilding the 37 to 48 pumps: http://mysite.ncnetwork.net/wgmumaw/index.htm
These early pumps are easier to do than the later ones as there are no retaining rings to remove before pressing off the pulleys.

I bought my kits from Macs, and you know where most of that stuff comes from. Everything looked good, the shafts were right on the money for size, but as I said there was no way you could press the impellers on without breaking something with the I.D. on the small side. I just used a hone and got them opened up to a 0.001 press fit. No leaks!
