Grease In Differential
On the 52 Mercury. I finally got the JD corn head grease for the steering box. Got that done and now I"m wondering, if the grease works so well in a steering box, why not in a differential? I know this one needs work as the oil leaks out around the input shaft whenever I fill it up. Hoping to look into it this winter during the off season when I can see what all it needs. Hopefully a bearing and seal will do it. But in the meantime, just for a few short trips maybe the JD corn head grease would work well in the diff?

Re: Grease In Differential
Look at the J/D website ,it says the corned grease is only suitable for up to 1000rpm I think.

Re: Grease In Differential
Sometimes cleaning the vent can slow or stop a pinion seal leak

Re: Grease In Differential
I'll tell you why I am thinking about it. Years ago I had a gear box on a rotary mower that leaked 85-90 gear oil out the bottom seal. I pumped ordinary gun grease into the gear box, added some gear oil to that and the mower has run fine for years. Oil stopped leaking too.
I'm not looking at this idea as a long term solution to the Merc differential leak but thought for short term til I get time to do a real fix that grease might work. Not sure what I will find when I open this differential up but it has a real howl on deceleration.

It's not meant for heat and high RPMs. You'll end up doing more damage. |

Re: Grease In Differential
This is not even close to a good idea. I would fix the leak or learn to live with the leak until you can fix it. If you are wanting something thicker you might try STP?
