Starter lug for solenoid
A gillion years ago I drilled and tapped my '31 A starter for a 3/8" lug to use a solenoid push button start system. My question is how thick is the copper contact on the starter as I want to convert my '29 CCPU to a push button.
Thanks in advance for your info.

Re: Starter lug for solenoid
I would bend the switch contact strap to be in full time contact, then run the relay cable to it. No drilling and no threading, and can easily be converted back.
I would never drill the starter contact, but if you go this route you could solder a stud to it instead. Just buy an elevator bolt and rough up the flat surface to be soldered. |

Re: Starter lug for solenoid
Just flip the contact strap in the starter switch upside down & re-assemble the switch. It will accomplish the same thing that Tom suggested, but you don't have to bend anything.
fill the hole that the starter rod would go in with a plug-button, just to keep the dirt & debris out.

Re: Starter lug for solenoid
Or you could convert the button to a proper stud. We have done a number of them. Less chance of a soldered on stud breaking off or loosing contact through the bent contact in the old switch because of corrosion etc.

http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-dielectric-grease.htm
Dielectric grease is non conductive, don't use it between the contacts or items that need to make contact. I found out today that Snyders no longer stocks the kit to convert to a post. You would have to make your own the V8 style is different. |

Re: Starter lug for solenoid
Actually dielectric or any grease is what I use on connections. It doesn't need to be a conductive grease because the clamping force of the nut will keep the connection tight and metal in good contact for conduction, and the grease will keep out moisture, which creates corrosion.
