The HV12 Zephyr engine was NOT a crap engine! People did not take care of them. I have had 5 V12's in different Lincolns and had rebuilt 2 . The last was in a '38 LZ Conv. Coupe, it was running good after about 35 years. With the Hyd. lifters, the oil has to be changed often and remember back in the late 40's and 50's the oil was 1 step above "drive way sealer". On my last rebuild, I used new lifters- VL-15 with oil stem ground off. Resurfaced the bodies. New, they were supposed to have about a .003 crown. Another important thing was , these engines were never run enough to cook the water out. Short trip, turn it off. Run to the store, turn it off. Go to Church, turn it off. The intake manifolds often "rotted out" from the moisture inside the valley. The only cracked block was due to the old lady I bought my '38 from, could not handle the mechanical brakes and smashed into someone. When I first looked at the car , the heads were in the trunk! Bad sign! One last thing--if you find a Zephyr or Continental in a barn , don't be a "hero" and try to start it. Drop the pan and clean out the "mud" .Thanks, Larry
