Model A puzzler
So I have just purchased a 1930 Model A that ran great when I bought it but needed a good brake adjustment. After driving it around for two days I put it in the garage to adjust the brakes. They are adjusted as they are supposed to be. Now the engine runs but the car won't move at all. Put her in gear and let the clutch out and nothing. I tried all gears and hear a faint "slipping" sound from the clutch area but the speedometer is reading 30mph but the car still won't move. the brakes are not that tight as I can still rock the car back and forth by hand. noticing the speedometer was working I figured it was the differential which I have torn apart and it was pure sludge in there which I have since cleaned and fixed but no broken parts anywhere. I have also opened up the transmission which looks to be in good shape. Does anyone know what this could be? Is it the clutch as I initially suspected? Since I have the whole back end in pieces should I continue my efforts and remove the transmission and clutch? or am I'm I just a novice who's missing something?
Thanks in advance! |

Sounds like keyway in axle is sheared. See if axle is turning

Re: Model A puzzler
Does your speedometer reading go up when you increase your revs? If it does I think you could assume that the Tail shaft is turning and that everything forward of the gearbox is ok. Did you remove the rear hub when you did your break overhaul? You may have sheared the axle key as ht murg has suggested or you may not have replaced the key when you reinstalled your rear Hub/s
Check the simple stuff first before you tear your transmission and clutch out. Keep us posted. Good Luck.
