Exclamation Beware New England :)

Better get those snow tires and chains mounted on your early Ford's, plus plenty of milk, bread and paper products . Looks like a couple bad storms coming together up there. Take care!

THey're saying a foot or more, we will see what we get here in central Conn. Worst time for me, I have to go get an adoption puppy coming in from Tenn on Saturday. Hopefully, the roads will be decent. If not, I've got my 4x4 to get me there!

I ws stationed at Hanscom Field for the 78 blizzard. The boss kept us at work until the roads were almost closed. We were off a week. I was caught at home with several cases of beer a cord of wood, a model A engine to rebuild and a train collection to clean. It all came out even inthe end. My Sandy was caught on 128 for several hours.

I'm in central lower Michigan and there have been snow advisories on TV & radio all morning.

I went out & got some extra gas for the plow & blowers - it spiked up 13cents a gallon since yesterday!

Snow is predicted to start around here sometime late tonight. I'm on 4 day work-weeks so won't have to deal with driving anyplace on Friday!

It's sunny and 79 degrees here in Tampa, no snow in sight, unless the cable TV goes out... Seriously, I hope everyone in the North East is ok.

Ken, that statement was made with tongue in cheek knowing how some of us baby these old Fords . We have a difficult time getting some folks to get their cars out in nice weather and join in on these tours we do. To be honest, I don't care to take my cars out in any winter mess with all the salt on these roads. I did start mine and pull it out of the garage for a couple hours this morning while moving some things around in the garage, but she's back in now, safe and sound . Old Henry is the only Fordbarner that I'm aware of, who has no problem driving his old Ford with snow and salt on the roads.

Nice and sunny right now. Balmy 26°. A snow storm in the North East, go figure. LOL. I recall more frequent large storms in the '60s with less hype than now.

I must commend the folks up north , the hiway dept. does know how to take care of the roads, after driving from northern Maine to Donners pass calif , and living in okla , I can honestly say this place don't know what bad weather is, and a majority of the people don't know how to drive in some of the snow and ice we occasionally get here , I call them Brake dancers , they seem to like to hit the brakes at the least sign of ice .
my son totalled out my truck due to some genious hitting the brakes when approaching an icy bridge, also I once was stopped by the side of the road in Wisc. reading a map and a snow plow operator stopped to check on my safety, I cant say that for the hiway dept down here, I learned after years of driving an old car to pack plenty of blankets water and food, just in case foul weather creeps in , the weather changes so rapidly .
here in the sooner state, as cousin will Rogers said ( if you dont like the weather in okla. wait around a few minutes it will change!) I wish you all the a safe commute during the bad snow storms , I totally understand what you are dealing with.
cheers ,
fordestes

Exclamation Re: Beware New England :)

People ignored the warnings about Sandy - some of them died.

This could be one of the worst blizzards in history.

New York was just issued a blizzard warning.

Don't absolutely need to be out ?

Stay safe - stay home

These probably won't qualify as blizzard photos, but I did take these yesterday. Mine is a "winter vehicle".

I could never figure out why folks just keep takin' that kind of punishment year after year.

It sprinkled a lttle bit today, but I do need to turn on the automatic sprinklers again or the lawn will die. And.. it's almost time to fire up the solar panels for the pool.

I know, you guys wouldn't live in earthquake country either, would you?

You guys reminisce about your perfect storms, out here we tell where we were when the Northridge 'quake rumbled through.

Some of the conversations here remind me of a time back when...
Me and a good friend decided we would fly to the Carolinas. Took a tool box as part of our luggage. We split the cash that we were takeing between us. We each put an even layer of bills in our shoes and went south to bring back a rust free something. Rented a car and went crusin, following one lead to another. Finally bought a 66 F 150 ( short Box custom paint,429 transplant) that we passed many times going to and from our Motel. We thought it looked too good to fit our budget. Ya never know less ya ask! Then with one day still left, we searched some local auto for sale magazines. Called on a Sunday morning, and bought a 65 F-150(long box 6 cyl). We headed home with our prize purchases. On had a noisy Alternator, so we stopped and boucht one at a Junkyard, just in case. Don't ya know, the other alternator crapped out instead. Somewhere in PA towards evening we put up for the night. They were predicting a SNOW STORM. Next morning, sure enough, a few inches of snow had fallen. Well lets have Breakfast and give time for the plows to clean up. Finally couldn't wait any longer. We hit the highway, and pulled on right behind the plow truck. Perfect timing!! Only, he wasn't plowing the 3 or 4 inches of snow. He was dumping PURE SALT down the center of the highway.OMG!!! Finally had to pass him. We had no weight, no snow tires, and a bundle of nerves. <So much for buying nice rust free trucks>. We were sick about it at the time.. Now we look back and laugh like -ell: Those memories are Priceless these days.. I'm sure lots of you have similar memories.. Enjoy.." THIS AIN't PRACTICE, THIS IS IT"

I remember the Blizzard of 78 very well. I had a Ford F-250 4x4 with a plow and I helped transport nurses to and from area hospitals. I had to go get my future wife at the Travelers insurance building, as they didn't let them go early enough. THe busses were stuck everywhere!
It's 2 pm and we have 2 inches out there,it's heavy as we were getting some rain mixed in right now.

SORRY, but I just got back from my water aerobics class, in an OUTDOOR pool. They had heated the water to 82*. I even got a little sunburn on my face.
We have a V8 Club Meeting tomorrow, so it looks like a good day to skin the top back and go for a drive.

I guess a "historic blizzard" is all relative to where you live. I grew up at Lake Tahoe in California. Waking up to find it had snowed 3 or 4 feet during the night would be a non-event, nothing out of the ordinary....

Most people are used to 6 inch storms around here ( So. N.E. ) and panic at the hint of snow. It doesn't help with the news stations hyping up the storm. As I always say..... Must be a slow day for news. I remember storms in the 60's and early 70's where a foot was normal and you adjusted. Now the world is all hype and drama. And as for you people in Fla and other southern areas, I'd rather deal with snow than your humidity and hurricanes. heh heh heh!!

Wow! It's snowing in the North East in February. If you listen to the media you'd think the world was ending. Yes the coastal areas could have some problems with tidal surges and high wind. People need to use some common sense. Stay off the roads and seek higher ground if neccessary. Let this thing pass.

Probably have around 8 inches and the brunt of the storm still to come. Wind is picking up, 45 tp 50 MPH gusts, you can hear the tree limbs cracking and breaking already. Here the snow is very wet and heavy, a real pain to shovel or push. Forecast is for another 12 to 14 hours of heavy snow, we are getting about 3 inches an hour right now. Going to run out of places to put it soon. Oh well, another day in beautiful New England, I wouldn't trade it for Florida.....no way!....LouB.

Darn tootin'! Here are pictures and videos of today's trip.
Today I found time to do my monthly run up the canyon to Wallsburg to pick up dad who bought Old Henry in 1959 and take him to Heber City for lunch. I do it rain or shine, snow, sleet, or hail. Also got to try out my new fog lamps to see if the 55 watt halogen bulbs would heat the lens enough to keep the snow and ice from covering them. Looks like they worked just great.

After we got back to Dad's.

Dad at 87 years old and still going strong.

Dad's double wide prefab house in Wallsburg. Heats it with wood burning stove all winter.

Here's a one minute video of some of the trip if you're interested:

Good going Henry! I knew you would be out in the snow with that old Ford!! Your Dad looks happy to see Old Henry. Those guys in Florida, and other warm places, just don't understand all the fun we have in these colder areas during the winter .

Mike, I'll be down later this month and again in March for Vic's gathering. I'm looking forward to having some fun in the sun. Come on down and join us in March for a couple days and bring one of those beautiful early Ford V8's that you own .

Hey, we put the chains on the Stoddard - Dayton Speed Car and went to McNeils Grocery Store and stocked up, but we only got 12" in Vermont. Still having high winds though, if they do not knock out the power we will be all set.

How much snow did the rest of you get and where??

Here is a link to some neat old Nor'easter photos. And here to learn all about Nor'easter's

In the 70's when I lived in Cleveland a friend and I went out late at night in a snow storm in his stock "T" Roadster. The snow was 10" deep or better. We were out for hours, smokin cigarettes and drinking a few beers. We were the only ones' out on the roads, after a while we started to run into police and plows. All THUMBS UP, no trouble. The tall thin T tires just sliced through the snow. It was a great once in a lifetime experience.

Got about 21" - 22" here. The wind is the problem. It made 4' drifts at the back door and deck. John is right. Go easy on the snow removal. I'm think'n a bunch of us up here should get together and send Vic a little present. Like a couple of 40' refer boxes full of snow and have them dumped in front of the play house. Yuk yuk.

I know it isn't but it looks like the old A&P market I used to work in at Warren Ma. in the early 50's. Store front looked the same. Drove my 49 Ford tudor to work every day and parked it across the street so I could keep an eye on it. Thanks for the memories.

Ken,
I grew up in Stratford..left 50 years ago. I recall the famous comment by Jasper McLevy (socialist mayor of Bridgeport from 1933 to 1957). After a particularly deep snowfall and the streets of Bridgeport were impassible for a week or so the people complained. McLevy wasn't going to spend money on snow removal. He said " The good Lord put the snow there. Let the good Lord take it away." The State moved in and cleaned up the city...dumped the snow in the harbor. Might have been the 1947 megastorm.
Don't overdo the shoveling..that's young men's work.

Very cool photos.

What's the road look like?

Note to everyone: Have spare belts for the snow thrower!

I've discovered walking behind a snow thrower may be the coldest place on earth! I use heavy rubber covered gloves over wool ones, good boots, watch-cap, hood, and a face mask. It helps a lot. Also I've learned to check the wind direction!

I don't know where you got your information. I have been here since 2005 and the hottest it has ever gotten is 97*. I bet it gets hotter in Illinois. Central Fla. gets hotter, but next to the ocean, it just does not get that hot. The humidity is not as bad as it was in West Virginia.
It does get hot, earlier in the day. I have seen it around 90* at 10:00 AM.
It was 83* today, with total blue sky. BEAUTIFUL !

I have to agree with Mike, it doesn't get any better weather wise, it's a balmy 84 degrees here in the Tampa Bay Area right now however, they are expecting a cold front this weekend, and the temps are expected to dip down to around 60 degrees.

Knowing how Winter is down there. What if we all came on down with ya? Might get a little crowded don't ya think. But I would miss the winter fun. Gettin the fire wood, shoveling for the meter reader, who never comes. Keep the oil fill pipe shoveled so we can have a few thousand dollars worth of fuel delivered. Oh yes, and then there is , clear the house drive, the car port, the walkways, and a place for our 8 in tall dog to do her stuff. Talk about dirty looks, put your 8 in dog out after a 30 in snow storm.
And then clear the back drive (250 feet)and shop parking area,60x100 approx.
Man I'm tired. So take Sunday off, I magin; Cause more comeing on Monday. Did I mention I would miss all of the Winter fun?

But we have gone GREEN now. Little Johnny Deere Green, does most of my shoveling now. Why would anyone want to go where it's HOT, and you can't even find a $400 pair of snow tires. Oh well, guess we'll put some wood in the stove.. Enjoy!!!!

Yup, snow can be an issue. So it takes 2 or 3 days to clean up so you can get around. I don't think I'd want to deal with a Katrina sized hurricane, the tornado's that Missouri just had or California earthquakes. Every body gets to deal with some weather and natural events.

Well finally plowed out totally yesterday. I was wrong on the snow total I gave earlier it seems we received 30 inches. Anyway now have to shovel out the garage in the backyard about 75 feet away. Mentioned it to my wife in passing now I'm trying to remove the shovel from where the sun don't shine!!!
