Rear Fender Repair
I am wondering what techniques you guys use to repair the inner lip on a 1939 Ford rear fender. I have a bead roller so I can start the bead that should run from bolt hole to bolt hole but the original bead is somewhat veed. What do you do to get the Vee? Thanks.

Re: Rear Fender Repair
Woodie, Those fenders look like the metal might be pretty thin.
However, post photos of the entire edge of the fender where it bolts to the inner fender panel so better answers can come forth. Last edited by 19Fordy; 08-10-2016 at 04:17 PM. |

Re: Rear Fender Repair
The lip of the fender can be made from flat sheetmetal, cut to shape and welded on to the fender. There is a bead on the lip and if you have a bead roller you can duplicate this bead. You appear to have some relatively good fenders and I would recommend you try and save them.

Woody
If you make a repair panel, make a pattern from your quarter panel first. This is not a difficult job. Bruce

Re: Rear Fender Repair
It helps to have a lathe or at least access to one where you can make the rollers you need. Those beads or ribs are to add strength to the sheet metal in that location so that there is no flex when you press on the metal between the fastener holes (fender installed). Many of the bead rollers have different rollers to do different jobs but not all of them come with what you might need. In that case, you have to make your own. There is also a risk that the bead will flatten the area a bit but that can be worked out after the patch is formed. Not easy but do-able.
