Do I have to remove intake / exhaust manifolds. I would rather not.

Re: Wanting to check valve clearances
At 800 miles I wouldn't think an adjustment would be needed.

Re: Wanting to check valve clearances
A little noise in a cold engine is not that unusual. Worry about it if it doesnt go away when everything is at Normal Operating Temperature.Good Luck

Re: Wanting to check valve clearances
Its better to have the valves a little loose than too tight.

Re: Wanting to check valve clearances
I am glad I am not alone on this. I did a mild rebuild on mine. Nice Babbitt, honed and new rings, and a stipe 330 cam with new big foot colony adjustable lifters set at 12 and 12 as per stipe instructions, up on start up, a little more clackedy clack then I thought they would be, but then quiets right down after the rpm's are brought up a little and a little oil flow.

Re: Wanting to check valve clearances
Fred, what weight oil are you running?
You may consider adding Lucas HD Oil Stabilizer... Designed specifically to address dry starts.
