No difference. They don't fit the 42-48 spindles. The hose hits the king pin. I have shortened the top of the spindle boss, king pin to fit.

Re: F1,f100 brakes for pre 49 fords
I have installed f-100 brakes on both a 40 ford and 48 ford with no grinding, etc. You have to mix and match the inner bearing and seal, other than that it was a bolt in, and what a difference it made! I am not sure (someone in the know please educate us) but f-1's may have a narrower shoe than the f-100.

Re: F1,f100 brakes for pre 49 fords
I'm putting F1 brakes on '48 spindles and found out the the chinese (Raybestos) wheel cylinders have the hoses coming out at some crazy angles. They'd probably be fine on an F1 spindle, but they wound up interfering with the washer on the top of the king pin and a little bit on the top of the spindle's king pin boss. Some judicious grinding made it OK. The old Ford wheel cylinders were OK hose orientation wise, but had serious pitting issues.
PS: This was on a pair of '48 (square) spindles. Next project will use '40 spindles with shorter kingpins. I hope it will be better.

There are bearings and seals (I don't have the numbers handy) that you can get from a good bearing supply house. Only problem is that the bearings have to have a good sized radius ground on one of the ID edges.

Re: F1,f100 brakes for pre 49 fords
Outer bearing is the same as the 40 Ford - inner bearing is a part number that is available. The inner bearing has a more square surface than the inner edge of the 40 spindle, so, some simple grinding and trial fitting will resolve that issue. I had no issue with the wheel cylinders and hose interference. You can use F1/100 front brakes right on up to '66. Also, there are certain year self-adjusters that will also work, making life even easier. Presently I'm using 66 drums, shoes, and wheels cylinders on 53 backing plates in my avatar - they stop very, very well IMHO. I'm using a drum-drum Mustang MC w/adapter off of a 39 pedal setup and 40 Ford rear juice brakes.
If you do a search on the HAMB I'm sure you'll find the complete conversion article with all of the particulars. |

This is covered well on the HAMB - check the tech archive and sort by 'brakes'
Here's one: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=5877

Re: F1,f100 brakes for pre 49 fords
Early Fords and the F-100 use the same outer brg. and cup. Timken 09067 brg. and Timkin 09196 cup. The F-100 spindles are larger in diameter in the area of the inner brg. than the earlier Ford spindles.
For this swap a brg. with the smaller I.D. is required. The necessary brg. is Timkin number 14116. It has the I.D. of the earlier Ford spindle and the O.D. of the F-100 hub. The inside if the inner race must be radiused slightly to fully seat against the early spindle. The stock F-100 inner cup (Timken 14276 ) is used along with a Victor seal 49196 or National 450461. This info came from a magazine article that I had copied off the web a few years back. I had it stashed away for future reference... Hope it helps.

Re: F1,f100 brakes for pre 49 fords
I have used the article from AR for quite a few brake conversions, even did one on my 3/4 ton 41, but had to switch to a 5 x 5 bolt pattern, since I changed the rear to 9" ford truck that worked out real good!!
