Default 31 rear bumper cross bar

My bumper cross bar seams too short, when tightened it distorts the two bumper arms. The dimension between the the two arms is 29 and 1/4 inches and the bar is much narrower. What to do?

lautens are you installing a one piece rear bumper or bumperettes if you rear installing the one piece bumper you need to install a spacer on each side to make up for not having the brackets for the bumperettes.

Mine is a pressed steel type and measures 28 and 3/4 inches. The rear bumper brackets measure 29 and 1/4 inches creating a gap. When tightened it distorts and pulls everything out of alignment. My bumper is a single one piece which isn't a problem. It's when the luggage rack is mounted it's not centred to th the car body. That's my concern.

Think I just discovered my problem, the parts book show a bracket part no. A17798 which looks like will take up the gap. Just cut the eyelet off!

Like JW and Bill said you need A-17799 rear bumper arm spacer.

Lautens

the spacers are made out of the same material as the rear bumper brackets. I have a drawing around here some where. if you have and old pair of bumperette brackets you can just cut them down
