Chassis Paint
Does anyone know of a manufacturer of "chassis paint" that has any colors beside black, flat black or gloss black? I'm building an AV8 and would like to paint the chassis a dark brown but have had no luck finding any color but some form of black. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Re: Chassis Paint
Lawson - Nothing wrong with it but was looking for something designed to be brushed on as opposed to sprayed. Russcc - Do you know if the manufacturer you mention has a website? Having a little trouble locating them. Thanks, gents!

Russcc - Found the site. Don't know what I was doing wrong, initially but got it now. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Chassis Paint
Depends on your build goals.
DuPont Centari with hardner is pretty tough as should be the modern two part urethanes. Have not tried brushing but I would assume that with a little experimenting, with the correct brush, and thinning it would lay in OK. Spraying would be much easier than brushing......... POR-15 brushes well and is very durable if you change your mind. I bought a gallon on eBay for about $100.

Re: Chassis Paint
Try this company out. Better than POR and various colors.
This clear coating is used on commercial jet aircraft, offers an extreme high gloss, and is far superior to your average automotive clear coats. This clear sands and buffs out beautifully, is fast drying, low odor, has great chip resistance, and will provide many years of outstanding service. Also available in gloss black, hot rod black (satin), white, bright red, and fleet colors upon request. Re: Chassis Paint
41PICUP - I have looked at POR-15 and it looks like what I want except it is only available in Black.
CA Victoria - I really don't have suitable spray facilities and any touch up work would involve spraying. With that said, I agree that spraying would be less work. As stated above the POR-15 would fill the bill nicely if it came in some color other than black. Capn John - Looks promising. Will investigate further. Thanks!

Re: Chassis Paint
If you want the true "chassis black" paint, it is a bad idea. A friend years ago painted his C****y frame with chassis black, because that is what the factory used. Everytime he wiped up a spill, the chassis black came off on the wiping rag. To get the correct appearance, just use a flat black enamel. It will last a lot longer.

Re: Chassis Paint
try tractor supply (tsc) they have an oil based paint that you can brush on, it flows very good, almost looks like it was sprayed on, its around $30 a gallon, its oil and fuel proof when dry, its truck and tractor paint, one draw back it dries slow, a couple of days unless you buy the hardener, then its dry in about 8 hours, this paint when dry wont crack as the frame flexes, its good for rims also, doesn't chip easily, its exlnt for real good restored driver cars

Re: Chassis Paint
KBS coatings have 10 different colors from the picture oxide red looks to be close to brown. I have been told that KBS coatings are superior to POR-15 and can be brushed on, here is a link to there web site.

Re: Chassis Paint
i like Rustoleum as well as any and you should be able to get the color you want or mix some colors together to get what you want and not break the bank.

Re: Chassis Paint
Gents - Thanks for al the input. Will check out TSC and Rustoleum. I'm sure they will be a lot less expensive. Will be having the frame sand blasted prior to priming / painting which should make for a good bond.

Re: Chassis Paint
Henry,
You can add hardner to rustoleoum enamel paint. Here is a link to the Valspar product some have used. I have not used this personally but there appears to be a fair amount of discussion on other forums. http://www.amazon.com/Valspar-4625-E...iglink20368-20 Food for thought: Research using an etching primer or metal prep product that is compatible with your paint(s). I have media blasted quite a few parts and while I prefer a dark primer under a dark top coat, I would use a red oxide on a frame due to it superior adhesion.
