Default readings on flywheel

My readings on FW to FW housing are 12 o'clock- 0, 3 o"clock 91 thousand, 6 o"clock 0, 9 O"clock 97 thouother than sand. Is this variation ok or what can I do other than replace housing. Thanks John

91 thousandths , .091" ?

97 thousandths , .097" ?

WOW, is all I can say. They should be within .008-.009". Anything under .010" is still OK.

Was the crank held forward for all the measurements ?

I'm not sure that can be fixed without milling the cover.
Most of the time this can be corrected by shimming or filing, but, yours is an awful lot.

How did the clutch act ?

John, are the 3 & 9 readings plus or minus. are they both the same (both plus or both minus) or different?

johnmi,
I think you must be misreading something here [no offense] your 0 zero read at 12,o'clock is correct, this indicates that the shims at the 2 top bolts match the gasket thickness between the housing and the block, 6,o'clock is Ok [this would be a matter of luck], I am thinking you must be in the .009 range not '090?.
I have always wondered how much influence bolting the clutch housing back on changes the left and right sides measurements, having a cone shape I would think it would be resistant to warpage.

Are the 9 and 3 readings higher or lower than the 12.

If you're within .009" you're fine.

Patrick, I have a question about your mention of milling the cover. Is it possible/acceptable to mount the cover on a milling table with the face which mounts to the engine clamped flat against the table and then mill the perimeter of the housing? I've got one that varies from -.009 to + .015. That's the best I can get it with shims. Everyone feel free to comment, I quoted Patrick because he mentioned it in his post

I've not milled one myself, but, there are shops that can and have done it.
If I was to do one, I would remove it and clamp it to the table and have at it, then flip it over and check it, and do it again if needed.

I've spent hours trying to shim some. I've taken a file to them while still mounted. Some have said that won't work, but, I doubt they tried it.

The worst one I did happened to be mine, .032-.034" out [ I forget which]. That clutch chattered so bad it would shake your dentures loose.

I finally got my readings down to .005 after 16 different shim settings. Thanks John
