getting transmission in neutral when out of car
i have the engine and transmission ready to install and decided to put the transmission in neutral before installing the engine/transmission as a unit. i thought it would be easier to stab the ujoint.
The book says put the sliding gears in the neutral position. Where are the sliding gears to be located. A picture would help. Thanks |

Replace the tower and engage the clutch. Once it is neutral block the gears from meshing with a piece of wood or Styrofoam.

I think the 2nd and 3rd gear needs to move forward a touch?

Re: getting transmission in neutral when out of car
The 2nd/high gear is either meshing with the cluster gear, meshing with the dogs on the input shaft, or somewhere in between. In between is neutral. The 1st/reverse gear needs to be between its corresponding cluster gear and the reverse idler to be in neutral. The two sliding gears mentioned have the grooves that the forks ride in. With tower in neutral, the forks should slide right in to those grooves.

Re: getting transmission in neutral when out of car
Hold the tower and shifter so you can see the sliding forks well. Play with the shifter so you can see how the forks move into all four positions and neutral. Slide the gears around in the transmission with your fingers to see how they move. When you can move the shifter forks to the correct neutral position, slide the transmission gears around so the grooves adjacent to the gears match the position of the forks on the tower. Drop the tower down, screw in two cover bolts and confirm that the parts are properly aligned. When I disassembled my car I considered taking multiple photos or engaging in creative ways to keep the gears from moving. I finally decided that this wasn't rocket science, and the worst that could happen is that I might need to try reinstalling the tower several times. I did just as described above, and the forks slid into place perfectly the first time.
