Air Filters again
Awhile back there was a lot of discussion about using a air filter on a Model A. The only thing I found avilable is a big ugley, clunky air maze that doesn't fit right. I tried various ways to secure it to the carb without success. I put a safety wire on it so when it does fall off I don't lose it. I want to use it because I am concerned about catching on fire since it's so close to the sediment bowl, fuel line and tank. I was wondering if anyone came up with a home made solution. Any thoughts?

Re: Air Filters again
My thoughts are still the same. Air filters cause more problems than they solve. The best way that I have found to keep the air maze from falling off is to use a lock nut on the bolt. The air maze with screen wire is not too bad and is a flame arrester. the air maze with paper filters is more restrictive and is a real fire hazard. The carb will run very rich, the paper filter can become wet with gas and ignite. Its your model A and your choice. The pressure is on to use filters, I hear it all the time.

Re: Air Filters again
I took a round file and filed out the cutouts that fit over the choke shaft housing so it snugs up further on to the carb, add a little low strenght loctite to the lock screw and wing nut, no problems so far.

Re: Air Filters again
There's a guy on E...... who sells a filter setup that sits higher than the carburetor so it wont soak up gasoline. The element is cleanable / reusable. His seller name is modela ed.
Good Luck, TG

Re: Air Filters again
A- Jay I got a zenith, One set screw with lock nut. I got a couple of suggestions so far that I'm going to try. Thanks to all for the replys. May be my imagination but I do think it runs better without it but common sense tells me I don't want dirt in the carb or a fire. Good point about the paper element getting soaked with gas.

Re: Air Filters again
See photo of air maze with 90 degree brass connector to carb. I cover the air maze with a air conditioner vent filter. It does not seem to restrict air flow to any significant degree. Just a thought!

Re: Air Filters again
If you're really concerned about dust etc entering your engine, borrow an idea from the Ford 8/9N tractors. (and others too) Mount an air cleaner/box above the engine with a piece of flex hose clamped to the carb inlet. It won't rattle off, It won't saturate it'self with gas, It won't choke the engine. It will suppress fire. Just a thought.

Re: Air Filters again
The air maze housing fits just fine on the Zenith in my car. I use an exter long KN filter (6") by lengthening the 1/4-20 mounting rod using allthread. I do not have the order # handy but others on this site will know. This subject has been kicked around any number of times and this ser up has been the best fix foor having an air filter on my car.
Good luck, John Wing |

Here is a link for the long K&N filter plus a good discussion about filters.
