Default Gas tank advice

Those of you who read my previous post on the hodge-podge 1931 Roadster I am working on know what I am up against.
Why dosen't my instrument panel line up with my gas tank?
It is a 1931 and friends say it is a '31 tank so what is wrong?
And how do I fix it?
Thanks
Lee

You need the earlier oval speedo dash panel.

Your 31 has an early 30 gas tank. like 700RPM said just get yourself a dash panel for an early 30 with the oval speedo or get a late 30 or 31 gas tank. There are also two types of 31 tanks one with the fuel shut off under the dash & the later style with the shut off on the firewall which uses the side bowl carb. If you get another tank look for one with the raised rib that goes across the entire top. That style holds the cowl band on better. Good luck with your project.

check out steve pluckers article on the gas tanks in the current issue of
Marc News
my two tanks are side by side and you can clearly see the difference
this should be the definitive article on 30-31 gas tanks

your gas tank is '29 early '30 your instrument panel is late'30 '31 with round speedo. are you sure you have a '31 look at the splash aprons if you don't have a seam running down along the front of the doors then you have a 1931 if you do you have a 1930 JAN l.v.m.a.c. PS '30 aprons were two piece '31 were one piece.

...for the record there was at least FOUR different tanks in 30 & 31.
Below is a picture of the tank shape you should have.

The splash aprons and the frame serial number show 1931. So I will just get a new instrument panel with an oval speedometer hole and get a new speedo.
Thanks to all, I didn't want the '29 look but it is easier than replacing the tank on this driver.
