2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite/motorcraft 2100
Does anyone have any info on these to carbs. CFM 500 or 350? Which one might be better? Why? Available new? Rebuild kits? etc? Thanks |

We keep the rebuild kits in stock at the Napa store where I work. Get me some carb. numbers and I will see if I can get you some kit part numbers.

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
Thank you but, I see that holley sells a new 2300 with a manual choke. The carb i have now has enough issues to just replace it. Pieces missing. Wonder if the new stuff is e10 ready.

2100 carbs come in various CFM ratings depending on venturi size stated on side of float bowl ( LF of carb). There are small versions from 260 V8's up to monsters from 429 2V engines. All are easily rebuilt with available kits.

Flat top Ford 2barrel CFM by venturi size --
.98=190 1.01=240 1.02=245 1.08=287 1.14=300 1.21=351 1.23=356 1.33=424 from a HAMB posting some time ago |

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
350cfm should work fine. 56 Ford 272 ran a Holley 94 carb w/about a 160 cfms. People tend to over do it picking carbs thinking if 500 cfms is good 650 will be much better. Your better off picking one with a bit lower cfm rating as opposed to the max the engine might tolerate. Personally I would choose the 2100. Simple carb to rebuild & tune but finding one w/a manual choke might be a bit difficult. But you could always convert the heat tube/automatic choke to an all electric choke cap. Just did that to my 4100 (4V), works fine.

I'm thinking about one like this... Will it bolt up? Linkage should be simple I believe.

X2 on what Lowrider has said. '59 - '62 Fords and Mercs with 292 engines came from Ford with a 2100 2 bbl on them. Find one, rebuild it and drive on.

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
I agree with Darrell above. It will fit, and it will run. I think that is way to much to spend on a carb that is so simple to repair and a stock Ford carb may get better fuel mileage. With a modern repair kit, it should be fine with E10 gasoline.

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
FWIW....I run a 1.01 @ 240 cfm on a 292 in an F600 on a 1 1/2 risor block. Try to squeeze some mileage out of it, get about 11 mpg, 7000+#. good torque ,,,

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
What does fwiw mean? Edit... Ah I googled it. For what its worth.
Don i've just had holley 94s and stroms97 before. So i thought that was an okay price on a brand new carb. The 2100 i have is missing parts and the butterfly shaft is sloppy. Ill have to keep an eye out at swap meets for a buildable 2100 or for the parts i need. Thanks for the help everyone. |

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
Hi Scrap Iron: On the cfm chart referring to Venturi size does that mean measured at the throttle bore at the butterfly's or at the narrow restriction in the middle ? :-) TJomt

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
The narrow restrictions in the middle are called venturis. The CFM rating is measured at the baseplate with the throttles open full.

My son bought that very same carb. from Jegs about 15 years ago for his 292-Y block . It worked well for a few years then sat unused a bunch more years . It needs rebuilt now so i guess i need to learn a little about Holleys . We just made a new linkage rod for it and the hand choke worked real smooth. I see they cost close to $100.00 more now than they did then , oh well everything else does too. .

Re: 2 Barrel: Holley 2300 or Autolite 2100
Quote:
One thing to consider on Holley CFM ratings is how they flow rate their carburetors. They flow the 2 bbls at 3.0" Hg (manifold vacuum at wide open throttle), and they flow rate the 4 bbl. carbs at 2.0" Hg at wide open throttle. So the 2 bbls flow a higher CFM rating from Holley. Don't know why they do this other than to make the 2 bbls look like they are more than what they actually are. Bottom line: A 350 CFM rated Holley 2 bbl. flows significantly less than you think. If a 4 bbl Holley had the same size venturi's and throttle bores as the 350 CFM 2 bbl., it would flow more like 550 to 600 CFM and not 700 CFM like you would think, because it is flowed at a lower manifold vacuum at WOT. I know this can get confusing, but it is based on fact from people I know that worked in Holley's engineering lab years ago. I also have many years of carburetor engineering and flow box experience, so not just talking out of my rear end. Sal Cicala |
